Not all us mid-western’s are MAGAs. You know, red hats existed before MAGA. See: https://www.redhat.com/ You associating the hat in the comic with MAGA is a you problem. Nothing in the comic is political - there's no reason to bring politics into every conversation. permalink fedilink source parent hideshow 4 child comments replies: [–] sxan@midwest.social 41 points 2 years ago (3 children) You know, the swastika existed long before Nazis; see https://en.m.wiktionary.org/wiki/%E5%8D%8D#Translingual . You associating it with Nazis is a you problem. The issue, of course, is that appropriation is a real thing and change common and popular perception is symbolism. Red baseball caps have been appropriated by MAGA, and aggressively used to symbolize support for a particular cult. We're humans, dude. Everything we do in communication is symbolism, with subtext, connotations, and implications. Red baseball caps symbolize MAGA now to most people in the USA, whether you like it or not. permalink fedilink source parent hideshow 6 child comments replies: [–] SchmidtGenetics@lemmy.world 18 points 2 years ago* (3 children) Coming from Canada. Red hats weren’t all that common before and with MAGA lettering they aren’t all that common now. Choosing to use a red hat while knowing what they symbolize, especially as that country rapidly descends into collapse because of everything that stupid thing sybolizes, is gunna be taken as meaning something specific whether you want it to or not. Especially when it’s the only bright colour in the comic and placed on the character who looks like a stereotype of the person who would wear it.
