I can't find any example of this. I'm thinking of like, a city besieged on land and on sea, and the defenders of the besieged city sending out an early attack against the naval blockade surrounding the city. Is there anything like that?

So Sorties are a thing on land because the attackers need some time to set up their defenses and build siege weapons and they're vulnerable during that time, but I don't think there's anything analogous on the sea.

Sounds like it would possibly happen in the context of breaking through a blockade as possibly a distraction elsewhere on the line
