I know what critical means in critical support, but I'm curious what Russia's motivations are here if true.

  1. Taliban are the de facto governing authority in Afghanistan.
  2. Taliban fight against ISIS.

It makes sense to seek an alliance with them to counter terrorism. Especially considering how ISIS took responsibility of the recent terror attack in Russia.

Fun fact: slightly over 100 years ago, Lenin also supported Emirate of Afghanistan against back then dominant anglo empire.
