Sylvia Rivera, born on July 2 in 1951, was a Latina American queer rights activist, member of the Gay Liberation Front, and community worker from the state of New York.

Rivera, who identified as a "half-sister", participated in demonstrations with the Gay Liberation Front. With her close friend Marsha P. Johnson, Rivera co-founded the Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries (STAR), a socialist group dedicated to helping homeless young drag queens, gay youth, and trans women.

At different times in her life, Rivera battled substance abuse and lived on the streets, largely in the gay homeless community at the Christopher Street docks. Her experiences made her more focused on advocacy for those who, in her view, mainstream society and the assimilationist factions of the LGBT community were leaving behind.

Rivera died during the dawn hours of February 19th, 2002, at St. Vincent's Hospital, of complications from liver cancer. Activist Riki Wilchins said this of her: "In many ways, Sylvia was the Rosa Parks of the modern transgender movement, a term that was not even coined until two decades after Stonewall".

What's the point of posting a thread asking somethinv if, going in, responses counter to the ones you want will just make you mad and report them? People

this is about the covid masking thread? I'm really curious to know when unmasking would be aceptable to them.

Yes it is, ya got me. Some other user posted a response that basically boiled down to "I would wear a mask if everyone else were doing it and I'll wear one while meeting with someone if asked but otherwise it's pointless" and they got accused of liberalism, eugenics, etc (even when they said they themselves are a former addict with numerous risk factors) and then their comment got deleted by a mod. Because the only comments allowed by the rules are ones which go "no OP of course you're right to be annoyed at people not masking"

Which is just so annoying for so many reasons, the person wasn't hostile or anything but Engaged In Wrongthink so woops, must delete their comments (and probably call them reactionary as well). Why even make a post asking a question if literally anything you don't already agree with is forbidden? Just title the post "let's circlejerk over how good we are for still masking" if that's the only point of the post.

I'm also annoyed because the person whose comment got deleted, like, yeah, that's basically my opinion as well. Masks work and are a vital epidemiological tool to control the spread of disease but if there's no official mandate forcing people to use them, and, consequently, use is rare it is exceedingly pointless virtue signaling to mask up and shame others for not doing so.

People don't seem to get that covid is very much a "genie is out of the fucking bottle" situation and telling someone they're gonna kill their grandma if they don't wear a mask just comes off as incredibly fucking stupid when that person AND their grandma probably interact with dozens to hundreds of unmasked individuals every day.

I go to work and am literally surrounded by people, hundreds every day, none masked, and because of that the only effect of me wearing one would be that I'd be that much closer to passing out from the fucking heat (with covid, because my mask isn't fucking magic and HUNDREDS OF POTENTIAL VECTORS are going to result in me infected anyway)

It's very annoying and especially so seeing it turn into this fuckin ideological bugbear for people to be freaks about and call each other fake leftists over
