On the same day that a white supremacy aligned university club encouraged students to report their classmates to ICE, hundreds of Arizona State University Sun Devils responded by marching in support of their undocumented classmates.

Liu Lijun, a Chinese graduate student at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), has reportedly had her student visa revoked after organizing pro-Palestine rallies on campus.

Liu was arrested in May 2024 during protests related to the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, which began on October 7, 2023.

According to the Telegraph India, the revocation of Liu’s visa follows an executive order signed by U.S. President Donald Trump, which aims to address antisemitism in response to the conflict. The order focuses on what the Trump administration has described as a rise in antisemitism across U.S. campuses and communities. One key provision of the order threatens to cancel visas for international students involved in pro-Palestinian activism, particularly those with ties to Hamas.

Liu’s case is one of the first instances of visa revocation under the new policy. The executive order directs federal agencies, including Education, State, and Homeland Security, to develop recommendations on how to monitor and report the activities of foreign students and staff involved in such protests. Additionally, these agencies are required to provide the White House with recommendations within 60 days on the legal tools available to combat antisemitism.

Liu was among hundreds of UCLA students participating in protests against Israel’s military actions in Gaza. The protests escalated in early May 2024 when law enforcement raided a solidarity encampment where nearly 400 demonstrators had gathered. According to protest organizers, over 100 people were injured in the raid, with some requiring hospital treatment. Police used flash-bangs and batons to disperse the crowd.

President Trump’s decision to revoke Liu’s visa aligns with his broader efforts to limit pro-Palestinian activism, particularly among international students. He referred to those involved in such protests as “resident aliens” and warned that they could face deportation by 2025. This has raised concerns that the broad language of the order could be used to target students who engage in peaceful protests without breaking the law.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) has condemned the executive order, arguing that it infringes upon First Amendment rights. CAIR emphasized the importance of protecting free speech, stating that such rights should not be undermined through executive action.

Hey so I googled the steps. I guess we gotta form committees, mobilize, raise public awareness, I got the syllabus. So like how do we get this thing going? Are there organisations already working on this or do we gotta grassroots this?

"Three students from Columbia University filed a lawsuit on Monday morning against the school administration for their suspensions related to their pro-Palestine activism on campus. Among the claims in the complaint, the students state that the university violated its own policies during the disciplinary process, that the university targeted the students for their views, and that it violated New York’s landlord tenant laws when it evicted the students from university housing."

It is not the first time Mitchell has caused controversy; last year he revealed he intended to home-school his young son because he ‘doesn’t want him to be gay’.

‘We’re going to have to home-school all our kids or they’re all going to end up turning gay,’ he said in an Instagram video while holding his son.

‘That’s the reason I’m going to home-school Tucker, because I don’t want him to be a communist. I don’t want him to worship Satan. I don’t want him to be gay.’

Mitchell, who believes the earth is flat, previously urged his nearly 500,000 followers not to vaccinate their children.

Critic Reviews

Atarita - Alparslan Gürlek - Turkish - 82 / 100

Sid Meier's Civilization VII blends and modifies features from its predecessor. Although it is a bit barren in terms of innovations, it is a good game in terms of the strategic depth it brings to the series. I can say that it is positioned as an alternative to its predecessor, not a sequel.

Destructoid - Steven Mills - 9 / 10

I’m glad Firaxis is still finding ways to improve a genre it has mastered over the years, and as a result, Sid Meier’s Civilization 7 has the series in its best shape yet.

GRYOnline.pl - Adam Zechenter - Polish - 6 / 10

Civilization 7 is a very pretty and very chaoitc game. Brave but not thought out. It introduces changes that aren’t inherently bad, and they build an interesting foundation for a probably great game in the future. Unfortunately now we got an early access production for a premium access price.

GameSpot - Jason Rodriguez - 8 / 10

Sid Meier's Civilization VII remains as fun and engaging as ever, but too many drastic changes lead to glaring issues.

Gamer.no - Andreas Bjørnbekk - Unknown - 8 / 10

Civilization VII brings the series the revitalization it needs, with gorgeous new visuals, innovative city building and a new way to lead armies.

INVEN - Seungjin Kang - Korean - 8 / 10

Civilization VII refines its strategic depth through era transitions and civilization changes, though the most thrilling moments feel more spaced out. Despite these shifts, the game retains its signature "just one more turn" appeal—undeniably Civilization.

SECTOR.sk - Branislav Koht - Slovak - 8.5 / 10

Despite the fact that the Civilization series has been around for a while, it still manages to bring something new that at least slightly enriches and changes the gameplay. Here we have another quality piece of work that is worth playing.

Spaziogames - Italian - 8 / 10

VGC - Jordan Middler - 5 / 5

Civilization VII is bold enough to add big changes to its formula, without getting rid of everything that has made the series iconic. Say goodbye to your free time, as from PC to handheld, every waking moment will be consumed by One More Turn.

XboxEra - Goldhawk - 8.6 / 10

The core elements of the game are there, they work and it’s fun to play. The incentives and dynamism that the new approach to Civilization switching with the legacy paths will keep the game fresh both across games and within them. Abandoning games after about 80 turns was a big issue for me in the last few titles. I’ve not had the notion to do that yet.

While it is vital for revolutionary socialists in Norway to learn from the failings of previous revolutionaries in this country, it is of course just as important to learn from countries with similarities to Norway, and to this end, Japan has always struck me as having a number of similarities to Norway, in terms of geography, topography, land use, and political status, et cetera.

For this reason I find it interesting that the Japanese Communist Party established paramilitary units in mountain villages in the 1950s, inspired by Mao's idea of protracted people's war — namely the establishment of a revolutionary base area in isolated rural mountain regions to wage guerrilla warfare against the government. Yet the JCP's guerrilla warfare campaign is described as a failure, and the party would eventually take on a reformist route and distance itself from political violence.

In Norway, one of the main historical communist parties (AKP-ML) was also influenced by Mao Zedong Thought, yet to my knowledge never tried to wage a protracted people's war in practice, even with its calls for violent revolution. AKP-ML did at the very least publish a book called Gerljakrigføring i Norge ("Guerrilla Warfare in Norway") which you may still find on Nasjonalbiblioteket's website, however this book was written based on the premise that its tactics would be used in case of a Soviet invasion of Norway, rather than being used to further the revolutionary cause.

All of this is essentially to say that my questions are:

  1. Why did the JCP try to start a protracted people's war, but AKP-ML did not?
  2. Why is the JCP's guerrilla warfare campaign (seen as) a failure?
  3. What lessons can we learn from all of this? What should have been done differently?

I've heard Reddit is setting themselves up for another major fumble and that it relates to how much Spez is a fanboy of Elon Musk.

I can't find any details on the drama playing out though. Can someone explain the details of what's going on?

I would love to see Lemmy grow with another big "Rexxit" event, but I'm not seeing anything happening to cause one.

While illegal crossings from Canada have increased in recent years, they are still nowhere near the levels seen at the southern border. Furthermore, the migration flow is not one-sided. In 2023, the last year for which we have statistics at the moment, more people crossed illegally from the United States into Canada than in the opposite direction.

In Fiscal Year 2024, USCBP seized 21,148 pounds of fentanyl at the southwest border, mostly smuggled from Mexico. In contrast, only 43 pounds were intercepted at the northern border. This means that less than 1% of all fentanyl seizures occurred at the U.S.-Canada border.
