That kim gun emoji is amazing

“What if individualism and idealism (the current superstructure) with communist societal organization (a future base)? How would this be sustainable?” They are right to be confused when they mash it together like that, but it’s not how societal changes happen and it’s one of the pivotal reasons that transition is such an important concept in ML. We know the current way of thinking and behaving will not change immediately. There is a process of getting there and AES states are living proof that it’s possible to make progress on it!

When I make these same arguments I'm usually bombarded either by "Chinese propaganda! They spy on their people, they have no privacy!" or "This is utopian thinking, humans will always fight in wars just like they did before, there will always be a society that is better than another and it will dominate them, it's human nature! Wee wee wee!"

The best that I can and others can do is to just educate, if they refuse then it's on them. A lot of people have their minds set on China, DPRK, USSR and won't change them.

[-] znsh@lemmygrad.ml 2 points 18 hours ago

Absolutely agree, it's however insanely difficult to do so (I still have a lot of individualism and egoism along with decades of social conditioning to overcome). It's doubly difficult to do so for other people around me, especially if they don't have an open mind or don't read theory/only read capitalist or imperialist core media.

The whole point of the period of socialist construction under the dictatorship of the proletariat is not just to create the material base for communism but also the human base

Another big issue I run into is that people don't feel like doing this because they will most likely never experience it themselves, so why bother if they will never live to see the day when communism wins. This is their thought process.

[-] znsh@lemmygrad.ml 2 points 18 hours ago

They are usually friends or family so I have a bit more patience with them, I also take it as a way to practice cool calm and collected debate as oppose to just straight up arguments. It is difficult though when they just don't want to listen or have an open mind.

Also it might come of that I am pulling these types of people out of thin air (had a post about a biologist and human nature), but I swear these are people that I talk to on a regular basis.

[-] znsh@lemmygrad.ml 4 points 19 hours ago

I would probably say petit bourgeousie and neoliberal ideas, which is pretty funny since she is a proletariat.

[-] znsh@lemmygrad.ml 5 points 23 hours ago

Oh and just to add, the absolute worse are administration staff not even the medical staff, those people are next level incompetent, rude, lack any empathy or respect.

[-] znsh@lemmygrad.ml 8 points 23 hours ago

I don't hate doctors/nurses/medical staff in general because I have seen extreme competence in the field, just like with any profession there are fuck ups worthy of gulags.

I've had family members being told they have 6 months to live because they have a cyst on their kidney and then through other means found out that it's just a kidney stone. To the reverse where they were going to public doctors for months because of leg pain and as soon as they pay a premium at a private clinic do they get a stage 4 bone cancer diagnosis. It's insane, truly insane. The fact that people's wellbeing is being exploited and ruined for profit.

I'm so sorry that you are going through this right now. You truly aren't alone, the system has completely let people down in most countries.

[-] znsh@lemmygrad.ml 8 points 1 day ago

Do they think people just do not do things unless they wage or profit incentive?

Yes, in their opinion no one (or not very many people) would be incentivized to pick up garbage, deliver food or do thankless work without monetary compensation.

Honestly, pretty good answer.

[-] znsh@lemmygrad.ml 12 points 1 day ago

This is probably the single most difficult thing for people to imagine, a different system to the one they are currently living in.

This was a question or rather a series of questions I heard over the weekend as I was discussing Marxism, class, labour etc. with a friend and I frankly couldn't really answer their questions. So here I am again asking it because this community provides incredible answers <3

The discussion was about work and their question was: "If class is abolished in communism and the people are taken care of, why would anyone work at all? Who is going to work in coffee shops, pick up trash, work in stores etc.? What would be the incentive for people to do anything productive?" I did my best saying that those jobs would still exist, but I kind of fumbled the argument.

Not a fan of BadEmpenada, but this was still a good video

The 4 day work week (lemmygrad.ml)

Along with UBI (Universal Basic Income) are these two just liberal bullshit in some sense or am I mis-analising?

38

A couple of questions because I'm still uneducated on these things:

  • Why do anarchists hate Marxists?
  • Are anarchists and ultras the same thing?
  • Are Trotskyists ultras and do they dislike Marxists?
  • What are the differences between Trotskyists, Maoists and Hoxhaists? Are any of them comrades?
23

Kind of a weird question I guess, but I wanted to know if I could somehow apply dialectical materialism to a game like Chess. Idk, it's Friday and I have brain space to think about these things.

I guess just title? I don't understand this move, Orban is notorious for being buddies with Putin so why would he accept the USA's support? Opportunism or? Also by "attacking Brussels" I meant that Vance was saying they were meddling with the Hungarian elections.

17

Essentially the title. Are there any orgs that actually have any semblance of influence in the west or are at the very least gaining it?

If not, shout out your local orgs that you like if you have any.

Got recommended some of his videos, primarily the one where he reacts and responds to The Deprogram's episode on China.

He goes off saying that China isn't socialist, that there is no such thing as "socialism in transition" or "highest stage of socialism". I stopped watching about 20 mins in.

The current world situation and what is to come is doing a number on my mental health, along with obvious and not so obvious personal things going on. I'm in dire need of essays/readings/podcasts/videos what ever to help me find some hope and optimism in these times. I really don't want to fall into depression and apathy again, it sucks.

Edit: I went for a hike and feel better :D

Doesn't have to be explicitly Marxist of course. I love the WW2 USSR posters and art myself.

EDIT: Is there a site that archives art like that (posters, magazines, zines etc.)?

32

Before I go do my own research I'm asking it here as I know I will potentially get further reading recommendations and such.

What is the ultra-left/ultras? I've seen a couple of mentions here over the past few months I've been on and never got to asking. I imagine it has something to do with ideological purity regarding ML, but that's about it and even that is just an assumption.

45

Reading Blackshirts & Reds and am at about 40% through the book. The amount of critique he is giving to how poorly the economic situation in the USSR was, how Stalin's way of running things and how people were negligible about their jobs because there was no reason to be competitive or to do a good job is honestly a bit stark. Is this anti-communism or is this just good faith criticism?
