We could have it both, where big instances like LemmyWorld or BeeHaw becomes the well known public interface, while they maintain federation with smaller instances.

VPN has its uses but it depends where OP lives. Places like the US? Sure. But most developing nations (mostly, not all) tend to be lax.

I just checked i2p website and it looks like they launched a bundled distribution easy to install just like torbrowser. Hope it catches on and more filesharing moves to i2p.

And the potential legal troubles. I don't exactly know how Lemmy's federation works but if a rogue instance hosted CP/CSAM for the lulz and OP's instance copied the contents for the freedom...
