In 2023, Germany said: “Confronted with an openly aggressive Russia, the importance of nuclear deterrence has increased for many states, including for [Germany].

Germany is one of five NATO members to host US nuclear weapons on its territory as part of a nuclear-sharing agreement. The German air force is assigned approximately 15 B61 nuclear bombs, which are deployed at the Büchel air base.

In 2016, Germany voted against the UN General Assembly resolution that established the formal mandate for states to commence negotiations on “a legally binding instrument to prohibit nuclear weapons, leading towards their total elimination”.

the traffic light was a third of a mile away.

I'm having trouble visualizing this. Does this mean that at a walking speed of 3km/h it would take ten entire minutes to get to a cross walk? Because that's insane.

In Sweden we have crosswalks very regularly, usually like a couple minutes of walking at most. For bus stops farther between intersections there are markers indicating that people will cross, even without a normal crossing marker. For areas which can't have a crossing (you may need to walk around a ways to get under or over four lanes) they put up barriers to prevent walking across.

I disagree. Pavement is valuable to pedestrians, cyclists, emergency and service vehicles, and the disabled. While it's important to preserve nature as much as possible, some urbanisation is also a good thing. That said, I'm not sure algae tanks would be necessary in areas where huge tracts of land aren't dedicated to parking. I can't really think of where my city would benefit from them.

The character in the first panel of that meme is Tomoko Kuroki from the anime "Watashi ga Motenai no wa Dou Kangaetemo Omaera ga Warui!", commonly shortened to "Watamote".

This is my punishment for trying to avoid making a post just to ask what show this is from.

I get what you're saying, but popular usage is what it is at this point, and pointing out the wider range of accurate terminology is just going to get people accusing you of being a pedophile.

I'm sure the understaffed folks making minimum wage really appreciate all the extra income this film is bringing their overlords.

It's from the movie. At one point Jack Black says "chicken jockey" in a very loud and serious tone, and it's exactly the sort of line a Twitch chat would latch onto.

I hate this because it's beautiful and I can't share it with anyone I know.

You leave the stroller for a moment to grab your take-away order and come back to a crow repeatedly attempting to insert a still-living snail into the baby's face. The snail is confused, but calm. The crow is frustrated. The baby won't stop screaming, further frustrating the crow. Just eat the snail, idiot.

I know what Rollercoaster Tycoon is, I just can't identify random game developers by their vacation photos.

I think y'all who are upset over the use of "freeware" are out of touch with how language is used in non-expert settings. Like, I'm definitely more tech-savvy than most people and I still didn't know about "FOSS" as a term until seeing it on Lemmy and looking it up. This just means "free software" to me and doesn't imply anything negative.

It even says, "the premier free and open source image editing software for multiple platforms" right in the first paragraph, so what's the issue? Do you think the headline will mislead someone into thinking that GIMP is proprietary?

Good. The chickens are surely experiencing richer and longer lives that way. Locally-sourced food is good for everyone, and the proximity to the live animals has the potential to foster empathy. I hope that many people make their own mini farms and share with their neighbors, and that a sense of community grows.
