If they were serious about privacy-preserving age verification, they'd be looking at zero-knowledge proofs. Since ZKP is not on the table, this is really about control and surveillance.

I have no strong opinion on whether this was or was not intended to be a nazi salute. The bigger issue in my opinion is how Musk reacted to people asking him to confirm that it was not intended to be a nazi salute. Deflection, jokes, ridicule, and tacit approval. All served to bolster the white supremacists watching -- and this, for sure, was intended.

If only all monopolies were so user-positive.

I suspect what's unique in valve's case is that they don't have investors and board members and other stakeholders to lead them toward short-term profit maximization.
