I use Debian with XFCE, but while I love XFCE, it might not be everyone’s thing. If you do give it a try, make sure to use Whisker Menu instead of the default app menu, and also set keyboard mappings to your liking.

P.S: Ubuntu’s pushing for Snaps, not Flatpaks. Flatpaks are actually pretty good - makes it really easy to install a newer software version when the one in Debian repos doesn’t suffice.

Also, it’s not only Ubuntu pushing for Wayland - most distros or DEs either have it working or are working towards it (there are some exceptions). XFCE is still on xorg, but working on Wayland. The problem is xorg is on life support and not getting a lot of new features.

Not totally right. Strange New Worlds, Lower Decks, and Prodigy are all decent as well. TOS is also worth a watch with an episode list, and TAS has a few good ones as well.

Discovery, in my opinion, isn't as bad some say either. It's hardly peak Star Trek, but I've found I enjoy it sometimes. I also have to throw in obligatory Orville suggestion.

As others have set, Lower Decks is not the first show you should watch though - it's more enjoyable after watching everything. Also, both Lower Decks and Prodigy, I'd recommend watching through the first 10 or so episodes before making a judgement - the first few episodes aren't their best. Lower Decks is often funny and at least once a season (from season 2) puts out a masterpiece that belong with the best of Trek. I'd say the top/my favorite LD episodes are (in no particular order):

Yeh. I'd imagine at least in urban areas, they'd be reclaimed. In more unpopulated areas, I could see them becoming hiking/biking trails, or maybe just being left intact in some places for the few hobbyist car drivers left. (I mean, Kirk's stepfather owned a Corvette in the Kelvin films, though that had Nokia product placement for some reason. We'll just say that temporal cold war stuff allowed Nokia to last a bit longer and make car accessories, and that this is still a very old stereo.)

It depends. The Cerritos is passingly mentioned in Prodigy, which suggests at least one version (probably ours) of the Cerritos is in the prime timeline.

I think distros at least do some stuff beyond repackaging the latest software, namely default configurations (or lack thereof).

For instance, technically Debian has the packages to do SELinux, but it's Fedora (and OpenSUSE, I think?) that actually come out the box with them.

They are also continually improving, if slowly, their package managers to improve the experience of sourcing new software, as seen with work on apt and dnf.

You are right overall that new distro releases have little meaning any more. If anything, I think they are a good method for managing the upgrades to new software; when a release comes out, breakages can be addresses all at once and solved for a couple of years, whereas rolling release requires a person to be vigilant and repair breakages more often. That is not to pan rolling - I use Debian Testing on my desktop. As much as I like newer software, though, I am thinking of staying on Trixie after it becomes stable, as I get tired of applying updates all the time and then something breaking that is incredible difficult to diagnose.

I have basically the same laptop (it's an E16, but with the same CPU - it's just the 16-inch version of your laptop). Make sure you press enter, press F1 to go into BIOS, then go into Security > Secure Boot and enable "Allow Microsoft 3rd Party CA". That worked like a charm for me.

If you're still having problems, try writing down the steps you have taken (down to the key combinations; some pictures would be nice as well). I should have all the same settings menus.

Don't worry, though, you've made a good choice; I've been loving my Thinkpad E16.
