I have been using Debian - it's the only distro I've used in my 3 years of Linux as a daily driver, and I started using it in VMs instead of Ubuntu a while before that.

I also like stability and Debian's community-oriented nature.

I am currently on Testing for my desktop, but plan to either go stable or do a reinstall when Trixie hits stable - I'm tired of rolling release and my programs changing frequently. I have really enjoyed Debian 12 + Flatpaks on my Thinkpad, so I think I will do that when summer rolls around.

For battery life, I’d recommend you install CoreCtrl so you can adjust your power settings. That, combined with a few other things (I think the Arch Wiki covers most of them) allows me to get quite a lot out of my Thinkpad in Debian.

Have you tried SSH-ing into the system when it's in the bad state to see if you can diagnose the problem? You might be able to see if any displays are being detected at all in the problematic state. Part of me wonders, though is not certain, if the switch is somehow providing an inconsistent display name that confuses the system, though this is just a hunch - I have no idea what I'm talking about, to be frank.

Also, try switching TTYs and seeing if those show up.

Honestly, just play with Linux in a VM for a while.

For your sanity, I have several recommendations:

• Linux has a central location to install apps called package repositories. Those packages are well-tested and tend to be extremely safe, so try to install from there first.
• Sometimes, apps aren’t available from the main package repository, so you have to source them from elsewhere. To avoid some of the fear, you can try using a thing called Flathub. I won’t go into all the intricacies of how it works or why it exists, but suffice it to say, some of the apps there have a verification checkmark.
• Also, when installing an app, research it online and find the Git(hub/lab/ea) repository. Start by checking if it’s under an open source license like GPL, BSD, or MIT. Although not a sure thing (like the XZ incident, which was an isolated incident), half the time if it’s under one of those FOSS licenses means the app is legit. In addition, check to make sure the source code is actually there- repos with just an executable file and a readme telling you to buy something are red flags.
• Finally, don’t go running random commands online without first researching what it does (with manpages or the like).
