Great to see Discovery cast getting picked up for principal/star roles in new projects.

If the actors’ contracts are for 7 calendar years but production is stretched out as is has been due to the pandemic and the strike, it’s hard to see how more than 5 seasons are possible without severe escalation in labour costs for US talent.

Contract length is a fair point. But so is the over reliance on US SGA talent in a show that’s trying to reach a global audience and represent a future that’s diverse.

Discovery had only five seasons but in calendar years, in which contracts are written, it was seven years from production of the pilot. So, regardless of the impact of the strikes, further seasons would have required higher salaries for Martin-Green, Rapp, Cruz and Wiseman.

One has to wonder if that was a consideration in the decision on Lower Decks as well.

Also, while federal and provincial governments give significant tax credits for the ACTRA-contract labour costs of Canadian and Ontario resident actors (50%), up until Rennie joined this season the Discovery main cast were all full SGA scale, although the seasonal ‘big bass’ have all been Canadian or resident since season 2. That can make a huge difference to the overall cost.

All to say, if talent salaries were the key driver of decisions, CBS Studios should put more casting in the hands of their Canadian casting director.

One has to then of Canadian/resident main cast will also put a cap on the potential number of seasons for SNW.

It will be interesting to see whether CBS Studios will go for the tax credit when they cast the cadet roles for Starfleet Academy.

One gets the feeling that Paramount senior management have been paying more attention to review-bombed scores on Rotten Tomatoes, IMDb etc. and YouTubers than to actual viewing minutes and audience size.

While Nielsen stats are only for the United States, it’s clear that Paramount has been doing vastly better by Discovery than any of the naysayers have claimed.

It’s disappointing in its limitations, yes, but another step in bringing warp-driven travel into a more mainstream conversation and line of theoretical research in physics.

As with Albucierre’s proof, theoretical research always starts with the corner solutions and odd cases to reduce the variables.

Ok, I can buy that, but it means that it created a true parallel universe and not a branch in the Prime timeline.

This could be viewed as consistent with the Kelvin universe 24th century officer not being able to survive in the 32nd century Prime Universe.

The specific point of divergence was shown in Star Trek 2009, otherwise it’s a real reboot and offside the television franchise.

But TrekMovie has one with the Breen that’s not on the StarTrek.com official site.

Seems like a quality control issue in sending out the embargoed emails.

Well, now I know who was the executive on the org chart responsible for all of Viacom and more recently Paramount Global’s stunningly awful corporate strategic communications.

There have been a lot of senior or management changes one tier down since the merger, but perhaps what was really needed was for Baklish and his top VPs to exit.

The Thomas Fisher Rare Book Library doesn’t seem open to the public all the time, but it does have events it seems.

https://fisher.library.utoronto.ca/fisher-events

Also it has participated in Doors Open Ontario which is an annual event for a few days in May, when many publicly funded or non-profit buildings that usually have restricted admittance, are open for viewing.

Yes please!!!!

I have absolutely been waiting for this to be released to Steam.

Finding games that I can share with our teens on Steam is challenging but important for keeping connected. So, we’re often looking for games that appeal to more than one of us. When we buy it’s 2, 3 or 4 keys. Having one for free to start would be great.

Resurgence really looks to offer the kind of role playing that makes sharing the journey in parallel fun.

These are lovely and something a child might actually play with.

Not everything should or needs to be for collectors.

On the other hand, making preschool toys for show that was in the air more than a half century ago is bizarre. I would have loved these as a small child in the 1960s but the the toys should reflect a show kids would actually be watching now.

Enjoy a day of better air quality due to the rain. Environment Canada meteorologist Peter Kimball is quoted:

There will be a risk of showers and thunderstorms on Tuesday into Wednesday. That weather is predicted to bring a shift in wind patterns that should return air quality to good levels once again later this week, after another period of smoke clouding the sky Wednesday into Thursday.

I09 sees the wheels coming off the Paramount+ strategic model with the cancelation of Prodigy.

Interesting piece with some new angles…

This time last year, the series was the bold vanguard of an attempt to bring the venerable sci-fi franchise to new audiences in a way Star Trek hadn’t attempted in years, and the latest in what was now a whole fleet of Star Trek shows on the platform. In a swift, single move—not just the takeback of a second season renewal, but the complete erasure of the series from its platform—the studio’s stratospheric ascent seems to have come crashing down all around it.

From North Bay through Ottawa-Gatineau to Montreal the Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) is again over the top of its range at 10+.

Athletic events and St. Jean Baptise events are being canceled.

Executive Producer Aaron Waltke’s list of positive ways to Save Prodigy include:

-- Completing your watch of season one. There are still a few days and completion stats count.

-- For those on Twitter and Mastodon using the hashtags #StarTrekProdigy and #SaveStarTrekProdigy.

— Using the ‘Save Prodigy’ avatars (linked here in an earlier post).

— Buying merchandise: DVDs, BlueRays, Actions Figures, Nintendo game etc. Much of this is already selling out in North America. In the UK, the DVD is now the top seller on Amazon.uk.

Additional options from fans that I’ve seen posted around social media to communicate your desire to Save Prodigy:

— Download Prodigy episodes from whatever streamer you watch Star Trek on (Paramount+, Crave Sky-Showtime etc.) or purchase season one and purchase to download from Amazon, Google etc.

-- Buy the chapter books for 8-10 year olds. 2 of 4 have been released, with the other 2 on preorder through major sellers.

-- Send a paper snail mail letter to the head of children’s programming at Paramount. I have seen this name and address posted elsewhere

Brian Robbins
President and CEO, Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon
Chief Content Officer, Movies & Kids & Family, Paramount+
1515 Broadway
New York, NY 10036

-- Sign the Save Star Trek Prodigy petition if you’re willing to deal with the (now commercialized) platform and the ensuing spam. (Completely understand why most folks here would not want to.) The petition has reached nearly 10k supporters in less than 2 days. By comparison, the one calling for Star Trek Legacy took weeks to gain this level of support.

If you or someone you know’s vacation was derailed by COVID last summer, you may find this interesting.

Canada’s National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI) recommends a booster dose six months after the last dose of a primary series or COVID infection – whichever is later – for everyone aged five years old and up.

But so far, (NACI) has only recommended additional COVID-19 booster shots for those who are at an increased risk of severe illness, including seniors, long-term care residents and immunocompromised adults.

The recommended time to get a booster is at least six months after the last COVID-19 vaccine dose or infection because immunity wanes over time, according to NACI.

Starfleet Design Twitter has provided a wide variety of ‘Save Prodigy’ images for use as social media avatars.

It’s one among many ways to show our support for those who are asking Paramount to reconsider, or at least demonstrate the show’s value to another global streamer.

I’ve adopted the Caitian (unsurprisingly) but are many to choose from.

Hope this is within the rules of this community. Tagging @[email protected] to be sure.

From the City of Ottawa - Update: A section of Montreal Rd under Highway 174 will be closed this weekend. Eastbound Montreal Rd lanes will be closed from 7pm tonight until June 26 at 5:30am. Westbound Montreal Rd lanes will be closed from 8pm Sunday, June 25 to June 26 at 5:30am

This should be a wake up call to the Mayor and councillors.

Their priorities and solutions for affordable housing in the region may need to benchmark on larger and more densely populated metropolitan areas.

Despite great effort to Make Ottawa Boring Again (MOBA), this kind of stuff keeps happening.

Isn’t enough that the Rideau Street MacDonalds closed with the reputation of having the most police calls (daily) anywhere in the world, including a customer altercation involving a raccoon?

Just so you know that Ottawa (the city) is more than ‘Ottawa’ = the federal government.

The support vessel Polar Prince towed the Titan to its dive location and kept station through the search and rescue.

The TSB has opened an investigation. The crew and other members of the Mi’kmaq Miawkupek First Nation members that owns and operates the vessel are feeling the impact of the events and the investigation.

The end of June wave of legislative changes rolls on.

Today, an amendment to the Competition Act comes into force that may have significant implications for employers and employees.

Basically, wage-fixing and ‘no compete’ deals between employers will now be on the same criminal level as price-fixing rather than only being under the civil law provisions of the act.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out, but it does send a strong signal.

With Parliament passing The Online News Act, Royal Assent is imminent. Next will be a regulatory process that establishes that the largest companies must enter into agreements to pay news companies their content generates revenue.

This is a significant step forward. It also advances the bar beyond Australia’s approach because it will involve an ongoing regulatory test to determine which firms are large enough to need to pay rather than having them designated by the responsible Cabinet minister.
