Would the best alternative still be something like Matrix/Element or is there something new/better out there?
The problem with these things is that it's really hard to convince others to move to a better platform.

I've seen this pop up on websites a lot lately. Usually it takes a few seconds to load the website but there have been occasions where it seemed to hang as it was stuck on that screen for minutes and I ended up closing my browser tab because the website just wouldn't load.
Is this a (known) issue or is it intended to be like this?

I use Actual. How it works is very similar to YNAB (you budget the money you currently have) but it's open source and privacy focused. I started using it a few months ago and I really like it so far!

I don't think it's the size but more the number of communities and how active they are. So if there are more people here it hopefully means there will be more active users as well. And perhaps more niche communities.
I use Jetbrains Rider on Linux which runs just fine. It takes some setting up to install .NET but it didn't take me too long. Except for pre-release versions, that might take more trial and error.
Overall I'm pretty satisfied with the switch to Linux and I haven't had any major issues. Not with video games, either. Protondb.com is a good website to see what games do and don't work on Linux and you may need to add launch options to get specific games to work or switch to a specific version of Proton.
It's up to you to decide if it's worth it for you or not. You could try a dual boot setup first.
