Yep, that software worked well for me. Eventually I upgraded the board and switched to LightBurn.

That could work orI think I could potentially shorten the front legs so it tilts more forward. This is a few years old now, it's mainly just my chair for sitting.
I started with K40 Whisperer, then after about a year I swapped out the control board and use Lightburn now.
I use inkcape usually for the initial designs.
Yep I cut up to 1/4 inch ply, but mostly I do 1/8th inch.
Haha always setting them down and losing them so I bought 150 presharpened one.

I'd say think of it as a learning exercise, where the end result is something your kids can enjoy. Better to make mistakes on ~$50 worth of material, where the end result will be loved no matter what. Maybe just don't start it a few days before Christmas ;)
