u/uniquenamesaredumb, you have warranty on the device you purchased, so take advantage of that, have that unit repaired or swapped for a new one.

u/fell_over, even on Macs, sometimes an application can freeze and stop responding... i know it sounds impossible... but, even on Macs, that happens from time to time.

In Windows there is a 'task manager' where you can see if the app is still responding... same should be available in the Mac.

If you see that the app is not responding (given your post, seems that the app stopped responding as it stopped copying / synching your data), then you can safely terminate the app, then try again.

u/TrainerNo6030, sorry to hear of your cracked device but unfortunately it happens.

Apple repairs are never cheap BUT on the flip side, if anything happens to your device post repair, ie. defective hardware, etc, then you are covered as they'll replace it at no additional costs to you.

We had a similar situation with the front camara and earpiece. One evening my better half just broke the news 'hey, by the way the earpiece and my front camara don't work... just letting you know'...

Of course in our case and similar to your story, I had heard plenty times at home the phone falling to the floor many, many times... so no surprise there, that at some point there was hardware failure there.

In our case, apple quoted also a much higher ammount (we are based in Europe, so here everything is in Euro) as they would not just replace the front camera and earpiece but quoted the whole display with earpiece and front camera + the necessary pairing of those components, otherwise the device will not even boot (as the camera is paired to the device itself).

While we were are the store, they run a diagnostics of all other components, so had there be additional damage, then those components would have been added to the overall costs/parts to be repaired/exchanged. That way is that we were told, that post repair, if anything else broke post repair, then it would be covered by warranty.

Now the question comes to, what is the device worth to you and are you willing to pay that price to get it repaired?

u/jjmontuori, the 'case sensitivity' issue seems more of a software/setting than anything else, especially since you've been getting it with your Drives, then NAS, so you should first look into your MAC, what type of settings you have, which I'm pretty sure if you dig in and search, maybe google search as well, you'll find the setting that you need to change to remove that constraint.

With regard to 4 Bay NAS(es)... any of the known brands, whehter Buffalo Tech, Asustor, Synology, QNAP, etc, again known brands are a pretty save option to go for.

Keep in mind, NO NAS OEM is 'perfect' per say... each has it's pros and cons and depending on your use case, you have then the options to choose from.

Now, if you want to have more of a comparison type of thing, then I'd suggest you take a look at a youtube channel called NAscompares (https://www.youtube.com/@nascompares/videos) and check out his videos. There you have good comparisons between brands and models and you can select what best suits your needs, budget and go from there.

as other redditor already suggested, place your question in the r/datarecovery subreddit.

Data recovery is definitely possible, depends on your budget and level condition of the drive --read your own comment that you tried to 'repair' it... sometimes that creates more problems than solutions... in that case you'll need a proffessional data recovery service, which again, depending on your budget and how valuable that data in the drive is to you (you never had a backup of that data?), then it will depend how you can go about recovering the data (or as much as possible) from the drive itself.

If you want to go the data recovery professional service router, then you'll be best doing a google search in the area where you live, get in contact and go from there.

u/trashermcd, most likely your device it's in a gazillion pieces, aka it's parts used for other devices...so it will never enter in 'lost' mode.
