Hot take: Dropping a single nuclear bomb over Silicon Valley would solve most of the world's issues

The most generous reading of that email I can pull is that Dr. Greg is an egotistical dipshit who tilts at windmills twenty-four-fucking-seven.

Also, this is pure gut instinct, but it feels like the FOSS community is gonna go through a major contraction/crash pretty soon. I've already predicted AI will kneecap adoption of FOSS licenses before, but the culture of FOSS being utterly rancid (not helped by Richard Stallman being the semi-literal Jeffery Epstein of tech (in multiple ways)) definitely isn't helping pre-existing FOSS projects.

On the one hand, that spectacular failure could potentially dissuade the military from buying in and prolonging this bubble. On the other hand, having an accountability sink for war crimes would be a tempting offer to your average army.

NASB - Brian Merchant's celebrating the first anniversary of Blood in the Machine's release

Reading through it, its clear an earlier comment of mine was dead-on - the public image of the Luddites has been fully rehabilitated, and we can primarily credit Merchant for pulling it off.

Mullenweg's the same guy who publicly harassed a random transwoman on Tumblr and had a general meltdown to the point where Tumblr staff had to distance themselves from him, so I'm not shocked. (EDIT: Somehow used the singular masc pronoun for the entirety of Tumblr staff - don't ask me how)

(That its Tumblr is the only thing that shocks me - you'd think he'd have realised its queer-friendly rep was one of the main things going for it)

In other news, AI can now falsify cancer tumours, because even the slight sliver of hope that it could help with cancer treatment had to come with a massive downside

Personal opinion:

BUTLERIAN JIHAD

(I know I'm probably going too harsh on AI but my patience has completely ran out with this bubble and touching grass can no longer quell the ass-blasting fury it unleashes within me)

It hasn't been hashed out in court yet, but I suspect AI mickey will be considered copyright infringement, rather than public domain.

Oh, that is beautiful to hear.

Not a sneer, but something that'll inspire plenty of schadenfreude:

Brian Merchant: The artists fighting to save their jobs and their work from AI are gaining ground

Brian's done plenty of good sneers on AI, I'd recommend checking him out

Just an off-the-cuff prediction: I fully anticipate AI bros are gonna put their full focus on local models post-bubble, for two main reasons:

  1. Power efficiency - whilst local models are hardly power-sippers, they don't require the planet-killing money-burning server farms that the likes of ChatGPT require (and which have helped define AI's public image, now that I think about it). As such, they won't need VC billions to keep them going - just some dipshit with cash to spare and a GPU to abuse (and there's plenty of those out in the wild).

  2. Freedom/Control - Compared to ChatGPT, DALL-E, et al, which are pretty locked down in an attempt to keep users from embarrassing their parent corps or inviting public scrutiny, any local model will answer whatever dumbshit question you ask for make whatever godawful slop you want, no questions asked, no prompt injection/jailbreaking needed. For the kind of weird TESCREAL nerd which AI attracts, the benefits are somewhat obvious.
