To these people "Chinese propaganda" is anything that shows China in a positive light, but is also something so obvious that a toddler could spot it as propaganda. They're so damn smug, they think all "propaganda" is incredibly easy for their enlightened western minds to see right through, if they don't see it, it isn't propaganda, like if it agrees with them.

Nowadays to these people just being showing Chinese people being happy is propaganda.

But what else would one expect from Reddit, where they talk about the Chinese in the same manner that stormfront talks about Jewish people.

It's the joke where a CIA agent tells a KGB agent that his country has very good propaganda, but when the KGB agent compliments American propaganda, the CIA agent responds: "You're mistaken, we don't have propaganda in America."

Google doesn't return anything for the "Langley Center for Democracy Studies", the purported source of this map.

Absolutely accurate

I have some notes:

  • What's up with Pakistan and Syria getting higher rankings than Iran or India?
  • Iraq more democratic than the US: mission-accomplished-1 mission-accomplished-2
  • Marking Taiwan as a full democracy was a nice touch.

I think that Bolivia is more of a flawed democracy than a full democracy? Bolivia isn't yet socialist, and elements of the far-right government are still in power.

Edit: Same for Venezuela

[–] [email protected] 15 points 8 months ago (1 children)

I don't know about Bolivia, but Venezuela ironically has zero pretensions of being a socialist country; there are no mentions of Marx or Marxism in their constitution. It's just that they pissed off the US really hard by daring to be a sucdem country while operation condor was in full effect and while they wanted to force neoliberalism into latin america. They also reverted the US backed coup almost instantly.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 8 months ago (1 children)

Hugo Chavez and Maduro have praised Marxism and Marx IIRC, but they've also both said I think that they aren't absolutely committed to Marxism, but that socialism is a long-term goal.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 8 months ago (1 children)

By "socialism" they mean something very different from what marxists mean. This isnt a dig at them or anything, but Venezuela inst really a communist project like China, the USSR or even Chile under Allende.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 8 months ago

I understand what you are getting at, but I don't think Venezuela eschews Marxism or class struggle, at least.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 8 months ago (1 children)

Pretty much but this is to be expected with government run by Democratic Socialists. They still believe in electoralism and dealing with the far-right in your government is par the course for them.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 8 months ago

Despite their pronouncements, I'm not sure if Chavez or Maduro actually believe in Democratic Socialism, or that their productive and militarized forces aren't sufficient enough to challenge the Venezuelan bourgeoisie and criminal elements.
