The incident took place around 10 a.m. Thursday. In a statement, the museum said security staff followed procedures to “ensure the safety of visitors,” and called police, who took the activist into custody.

The mischief is the latest demonstration by Last Generation Canada, previously known as On2Ottawa, a civil disobedience group that formed in 2023. The group says its actions are intended to draw attention to the climate crisis and to demand Canadian government action.

The activists said Thursday they chose a dinosaur skeleton to highlight the risk of mass extinction prompted by the climate crisis.

Why fuck up museums, though. You’re intentionally trying to get people to hate and oppose everything you do? I don’t get it.

A chemical refinery, a . . . gas station, some muckety-muck’s yacht, sure I can see that. But museums? FFS. You can fuck right off with that nonsense.

There's a theory floating around the internet that these bizarre climate protests are actually meant to discredit the climate movement.

[–] [email protected] 14 points 9 months ago

It's one of the few that I can't discredit outright. After all, these corporations have shit tons of money and are shady af. I would expect something like this, and of course, they would never hit their own facilities.

This line of logic is going to be applied to literally any target of this kind of protest.

Uh, no. When they did some private jets the reaction was overall positive. There are plenty of legitimate targets for this sort of protest. Scientific exhibits or works of art don't fall under that category. These people are either mentally unstable attention seekers or actually have nefarious intentions.

Last year, the wildfires in Canada were crazy. Based on the mildness of this winter, I think this summer's wildfires will probably be similar to last year's.

I think many Canadians are 'asleep at the wheel' when it comes to climate change.

The people behind the spray painting of this faux dinosaur might seem a little hysterical. But their "#1 demand" is a national forest firefighting agency - it's on the landing page of their website. I visited their webpage for the first time today because their demonstration made the local press.

When I try to "step back" 50 - 100 years, I can't imagine these people appearing to be on the wrong side of history.

I didn’t even know they had a website until you pointed it out. Employing 50,000 firefighters across the nation would be an incredible undertaking, let alone training them. From what I’ve read each province and territory has unique ways of firefighting requirements, so the curriculum can’t be a one-size fits all solution.

I can’t seem to find much more information since the government pledged $256 million over 5 years to their wildfire equipment fund. Unfortunately for us the group has not put out an official response to counter the government’s press release. Oddly enough, no acknowledgement of the fund exists in their press releases to this date.

We don't think the government is doing enough to protect nature, so we're going to go fuck up the museum of nature!

That'll show 'em!
