"Everyone knew it was impossible. But then, a fool who didn't know came along. And afterwards he also knew."

Just throw yourself at the ground and miss.

Now there’s a hoopy frood who knows where his towel is

Experienced people will tell you that the key is to be distracted before you hit the ground.

Of course, most people’s experience is short lived since they’re not experienced enough of to die trying.

I've never once missed. I'm just that good

And don't panic!

[–] [email protected] 4 points 9 months ago

Every time I hear this, I imagine somebody jumping into a belly flop, but instead of falling just yeeting over the horizon at the speed if light.

Bro, I sat in planes before, it’s not that hard

Define “fly”

I’ve been airborne due to me not jumping or falling, carrying a sheet of plywood and windy days are fun. Airfoil goes WHEEEE.

I took flight in a 4-wheeler and hit my sternum on the handlebars

That's the only time I ever rode a 4-wheeler

The scar on my forehead from honestly trying to fly is all of the evidence that I need that I honestly tried to fly.

The boy who lived!

"The Guide says there is an art to flying", said Ford, "or rather a knack. The knack lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss."

That is actually a pretty accurate summary of how orbits work.

[–] [email protected] 22 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Me. I have. No, like, I've literally had flight lessons, 10/10 highly recommended.

[–] [email protected] 13 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Is their some frequency I should be flapping my arms to cus like planes and gliders are expensive and they need maintenance

[–] [email protected] 9 points 9 months ago

From random stack exchange nonsense: 750Hz-ish? Idk would be nice to run some actual fluid dynamics on, you'd probably run into issues with that pesky sound barrier...

But in all seriousness a paramotor is relatively cheap ($10-15k ish depending on how much you spend on a training program). I've only flown fixed-wing since I got financial aid for lessons (there are a TON of scholarships out there if you're serious about flying, there's a huge pilot shortage right now).

[–] [email protected] 17 points 9 months ago

Looks at framed certificate of pilots license...cries a little.

[–] [email protected] 15 points 9 months ago

Just remember, kids! If you don't start from the flat ground it doesn't count as flying! So don't go jumping off the roof or the bridge, because even if you succeed we'll tell everyone you cheated.

[–] [email protected] 14 points 9 months ago

I did. Okay, the 1 megawatt indoor skydiving installation helped a bit, but I was flying.

[–] [email protected] 14 points 9 months ago

cover yourself in oil

[–] [email protected] 13 points 9 months ago (2 children)

I mean I have not researched but I tried pretty hard to jump off the ground and will myself up so I could fly like my dreams and I think that counts.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 9 months ago

All the damn time as a kid. So no one can say I didn't try.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 9 months ago

You didn't try hard enough.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 9 months ago (1 children)

I flew in third grade during recess just east of the swings while I was chasing a leaf. Only flew about 3 feet off the ground for maybe 10-12 feet and glided back down.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 9 months ago (1 children)

See, the trick is you were supposed to miss the ground

[–] [email protected] 2 points 9 months ago (1 children)

I wasn't trying to do anything, it just happened.
