China is going to eat the entire tech market in due time. I just hope I can still buy tech from them in the long run. Eventually they will have solid SoCs for cheaper than anything else. ESP32 is already gaining massively in the lower-end DIY market.

They also just recently announced ramping up of new DRAM production and are quickly building capacity to produce solid state storage.

It really is a shame to see all this RAM on RaspberryPis not being used in data centers...

in the most sympathetic interpretation of mr. altman, raspberries do work 24/7 and thus not a waste (as opposed to ideal gaming pc which works 2 hours a day). but, of course, he owns more than one car, so the core idea is bad faith anyways.

Short of China taking an absolute dump on the market (though I think they'd tarrif it back up there) I doubt I'll ever own a new computer ever again. It's eBay and fb marketplace for me the rest of my life.

i think when those mythical nvl72 sitting in warehouses turn on and there is no more demand, the prices on hardware/wafers will probably crash, which is something jensen knows and cautiously advocates using local llm if you really want to protect your predatory corporation privacy, to get another market. is there really a demand for 10x llm usage, 100 bucks per each american a month, 360 billion per year? i very much doubt it, government can spin this a little bit further, but not forever.

why would you need panopticon for americans, so that they would buy more nike shoes? conversely, nsa already has what it needs (well unless those bugs were theirs).

America is moving from a consumer economy to a prisoner from home economy.

to a prisoner from home economy.

You say this half jokingly, but it's quite literally Deleuze's Society of Control.

Oh, no, I'm not joking about this at all. Some years ago (early 2010s?) Geo Group started investing heavily into house arrest related tech. While ICE is still keeping a hefty amount of folks as onsite slaves, they've also been sending a lot of them home with ankle bracelets and other monitoring solutions. The neoliberal psychological enslavement project is being sunset and US porky-happy are shifting America back into old fashioned slavery as fast as they can get away with.

Nike owns converse, so it is entirely possible to

    buy more nike shoes? conversely

Idk whether this was intentional on your part but either way good bit.

i get used laptops for free from my family to do shenanigans on. theyd normally go to a dump. last time i was at goodwill i saw some decently specced laptops going for 20-50 bucks, they were 6 years old tops. who is this even for now? people that need extreme power efficiency and compute for the cost? idk if a raspberry pi is even good for that over say an old used pixel running a linux kernel now

I imagine the main customer are companies building shitty appliances that use a raspberry pi. I also have a 3D printer that is powered by a raspberry.

For a home server used PCs should be an easy choice. I guess a lot of people might still fall for a raspberry pi at least once.

For networked electronics there are so many better choices nowadays.

my first home server was a rasp pi 4b 8GB which ran me abour 120 quid after getting all the accessories for it. I didnt buy a 5 back when they launched mainly because it was slower for media transcoding (it doesnt have a hardware transcoder at all!) which was all I would see when I researched it for homelabbing

Even 10 year old second-hand PCs are going for ~$200-$300 now it's insane. Tried to bid on a few during the Radio Free Asia HQ liquidation auction and I was baffled by how much people were bidding on crap that would be worth $40 a few years ago.

Liquidation bidders are a bit unhinged sometimes (especially if you factor in that it's usually more annoying to get you shit than on eBay). But yeah I also noticed that used hardware has gotten more expensive.
