Here it is! The November bloomer mega! Once again for if people want to share the good things happening in their lives! It can be something big like international news that brightened your day, or something small like a cool bug you found.

Either way, if you need a place to escape the noise and boost your morale for a second, this is it!

The only rule is to keep the vibes chill!

SOOOOOOO I hear Lula won in Brazil, and that the French did some pretty fire protests (Get it? Because they set some things on fire but also I mean fire as in peak, cool, whatever the hip kids say. I am very funny.) Anyway, it's good. People are doing things. Things have been happening. Will these things amount to anything? Who knows, but at least people are getting pissed off enough to break the civility brainworms.

Anyway, relax and don't eat all my doribos or I'll kick you out. OK you can have some but don't do that thing where you lick them all so no one else can have them.

Migraine free for months I think I’m in the clear. The last 2 years were rough as fuck I’m glad I feel like I’m at the end of this episode of my life.

Halloween is so cute when there's kids involved. Seeing pure joy and innocence really pushes back the bad thoughts and makes me feel nice

So much of the headline news in my life is bittersweet or objectionable it's hard to even think of something to post here.

I've made a new friend with whom I've been playing a lot of Raft. If you remember that friendslop game where you start on a 2x2 square raft in the middle of the ocean. You have hooks to gather trash and expand your ride. You end up eventually making a radio and through that come to find there's a narrative to follow throughout the world.

I expected to play it once so that I could talk to them before continuing a relationship. They ended up really liking the game. One day we're getting ready to play and they ping me like "I had trouble sleeping and then I found creative mode, come check this out." They had designed a 3 story yacht with rooms, an indoor-outdoor system and engines on the boat. It was unbelievable.

So over the next 50+ hours we proceed to finish the story and get to work turning the ship into their dream ship. We made a kitchen, a sofa in front of a fireplace, an engine room, a bedroom, a navigation helm, and a rooftop where we keep all the animals, bees, and trees.

The once overwhelming tasks of navigating a big island with hostile mobs on it turns into background noise as we discuss what to spend our rapidly accumulating currency on. In fact, we sought out the island because it pinged on our radar and we knew we needed stuff from around the reef.

The chances of me bothering with this game without them was slim to none, and the chance of me going into creative and coming out with a vision for design+interior design are so laughable it's not worth consideration. But instead I get to think about how to make a vision possible and that's my favorite.

    I am very funny.

I know this is supposed to be a self-depricating joke, but you actually are funny! Of all the people I know online, you are by far the one that makes me laugh and smile the most frequently. You're witty, entertaining, and have a great sense of humor. cuddle

Shit, I said I would stop with the self-depricating jokes, whoops. I think I'm getting better at not doing that though, it only slips out once in a while.

But also holy shit thank you, that's a really nice thing to say

I find their jokes to be very refreshing and their insights keep me in check when I feel like I'm not (doing) enough. I wouldn't have to think about it before saying they're a positive influence for me.

The @Dort_Owl@hexbear.net mental health economy has an inexplicable linkage to the wdymp economy. I need them to have peace with their humor and general demeanor of pleasantness or my own stocks go down.

@WhatDoYouMeanPodcast@hexbear.net and I had a lovely conversation in the last bloomer mega about writing, what works and what helps to figure your story out, and while that was the old mega, I had an amazing realization while editing my draft. The messaging I was going for by the end of it (finally letting certain things&people go) has been in the story from the very beginning, and I didn't notice until I finished the draft and started editing. It really is like you said, WDYMP:

There's a chance you only come to know what the heck you wanted to say after you've already said 100k words

Congratulations!! I'm so happy for you! I'm proud of you for not just waiting and hoping that inspiration strikes you but instead taking the active steps to craft it for yourself.

I'd love to learn what that switch that flipped for you and what that lightbulb moment was

Thank you!! I'm doing my best and it feels absolutely worth it right now, so thank you for believing in me! meow-hug

lightbulb momentI was rewriting a scene from a side plot that ties into the main plot when I scrolled over a scene I thought was very emotionally intense while writing it. Short version: my protagnoist is talking to "the ghost" of her ex, and they had a really complicated relationship, but he asks her to finally let go. I was so captivated by what I wrote, I completely forgot about editing and reread the entire scene, then put down the draft and decided to do something else. My head wasn't in the game for rewriting or editing, so I figured I'll leave it be. Then I think a day or so later, I was doing something unrelated when it finally hit me: Letting go of that ghost isn't the first time I mention this emotional concept, and there were multiple scenes before and after that one that feature "letting go". The first few are very subtle, then they become more obvious until the point where I as the author actually acknowledge the elephant in the room and make it into the main purpose of the story. Smoothing that thing out to feel more natural is now the main purpose of the current editing process.

i got my ass back to queer self defence class this week after a break. we practiced escaping from being grabbed around the waist from behind, then taking down and pinning the attacker.

ooh and i've got a fun little project to help out with at the anarchist club. i went there one day last week and was out of the house for nearly 9 hours, which is usually very firmly in "guaranteed panic attack and a week+ of recovery" territory for me. but i was fine. i had a good time, even.

Queer self defense rules! If I were in a more stable place in my life I'd love to plan and execute offering that formally. Withy decade+ of combat sports I bet I can do a soul read: you clinch around the waist, bump the knee, and place them into a pin. I heard evidence recently that surprised me. That's actually the highest percentage (I.e. most reliable) takedown that mma fighters do. It also happens to be the day 1 move that they have me teach for stand up in BJJ fundamentals classes.

Though I would deviate sometimes so I could spice it up. When I was cross training judo, they'd give me a list of techniques I'd need to do for a belt promotion test. So I would do active studying by researching the move, explaining how it works to newbies, and critiquing their form. They got to do stand up besides the side clench and I got my judo yellow belt. It was a win-win

yeah i honestly love it there. i've probably said this here before, but i'd always felt like these kinds of heavily-gendered macho spaces were inaccessible to me. and now they're not, and i get to train with people who are like me and just treat me like a normal human. it would def be cool if you ever found yourself able to offer something similar in your area!

my friend and i are fairly new to this and she also has some knee issues, so it's quite possible that we were taught simpler techniques. the way we learned was:

    • attacker grabs defender around the waist from behind
    • defender pushes down on attacker's wrists to break their grip
    • defender grabs attacker's arm, keeps tight to the attacker's body, pulls the arm forward to partially rotate attacker, and steps behind them
    • defender drops to one knee, pulls attacker over it so they hit the floor
    • defender puts full body on top of attacker, pulls attacker's forearm back as they try to get up, and and pins the legs with their own (i'm not doing a good job explaining this part but i tried very hard and couldn't escape from it when executed properly)
    • attacker is now face-down and immobilised, defender has a free arm and free movement of their upper body

a decade though is really impressive and i love that you're teaching it a little now. i think i got to either blue or purple belt at karate when i was a kid, but that was a long time ago and i don't remember much of it.

Idk if there is a better way than going on https://hexbear.net/communities?listingType=All&sort=New&page=1 and scrolling until you find something.

If someone gives you the link it's easier but discovery is a bit difficult.

Subscribing to remote comms is a super sucky experience. In theory, you go to Communities -> All and search for stuff, but you can’t search by remote instance, so you need to have already visited the remote comm list to figure out what’s hosted there and search for them.

It’ll be easier to click these links, which keep whatever local instance you click them from, and then hit subscribe in the sidebar (similar to @user tags or :emoji-codes:, just start typing !commName and click the result):

That’s all they’ve got at the moment!

I still don't understand how federation works

Every time I think I’m getting close I learn otherwise. At this point I might have more experience with how federation doesn’t work than with how it does.

Oh… yeah, for about a month and a half now.

Basics are: the Dutch hosting provider was owned by a Russian who had been sanctioned, and then the managing director got arrested (possibly related?), and since then they’ve been down.

There hasn’t been a recent update - latest I saw was Sal hoping to regain access due to not having recent backups, but that was a while ago.
