Here it is! The November bloomer mega! Once again for if people want to share the good things happening in their lives! It can be something big like international news that brightened your day, or something small like a cool bug you found.

Either way, if you need a place to escape the noise and boost your morale for a second, this is it!

The only rule is to keep the vibes chill!

SOOOOOOO I hear Lula won in Brazil, and that the French did some pretty fire protests (Get it? Because they set some things on fire but also I mean fire as in peak, cool, whatever the hip kids say. I am very funny.) Anyway, it's good. People are doing things. Things have been happening. Will these things amount to anything? Who knows, but at least people are getting pissed off enough to break the civility brainworms.

Anyway, relax and don't eat all my doribos or I'll kick you out. OK you can have some but don't do that thing where you lick them all so no one else can have them.

Queer self defense rules! If I were in a more stable place in my life I'd love to plan and execute offering that formally. Withy decade+ of combat sports I bet I can do a soul read: you clinch around the waist, bump the knee, and place them into a pin. I heard evidence recently that surprised me. That's actually the highest percentage (I.e. most reliable) takedown that mma fighters do. It also happens to be the day 1 move that they have me teach for stand up in BJJ fundamentals classes.

Though I would deviate sometimes so I could spice it up. When I was cross training judo, they'd give me a list of techniques I'd need to do for a belt promotion test. So I would do active studying by researching the move, explaining how it works to newbies, and critiquing their form. They got to do stand up besides the side clench and I got my judo yellow belt. It was a win-win

yeah i honestly love it there. i've probably said this here before, but i'd always felt like these kinds of heavily-gendered macho spaces were inaccessible to me. and now they're not, and i get to train with people who are like me and just treat me like a normal human. it would def be cool if you ever found yourself able to offer something similar in your area!

my friend and i are fairly new to this and she also has some knee issues, so it's quite possible that we were taught simpler techniques. the way we learned was:

    • attacker grabs defender around the waist from behind
    • defender pushes down on attacker's wrists to break their grip
    • defender grabs attacker's arm, keeps tight to the attacker's body, pulls the arm forward to partially rotate attacker, and steps behind them
    • defender drops to one knee, pulls attacker over it so they hit the floor
    • defender puts full body on top of attacker, pulls attacker's forearm back as they try to get up, and and pins the legs with their own (i'm not doing a good job explaining this part but i tried very hard and couldn't escape from it when executed properly)
    • attacker is now face-down and immobilised, defender has a free arm and free movement of their upper body

a decade though is really impressive and i love that you're teaching it a little now. i think i got to either blue or purple belt at karate when i was a kid, but that was a long time ago and i don't remember much of it.

  • It sounds like you have a bit of wrestling influence in there which is cool. What I think you're describing is a hammer lock, which people usually associate with bouncers and police officers pre-cuffing.

I'm actually partial to tummy down progressions because I spent a little bit of time training with an MMA team. It makes my grappling unique compared to my peers. People will get lazy trying to escape from me and wind up in what is arguably the worst possible position to be in.

Hexbear is so funny because even the person I've been involved with told me that I'm "bad with gender". Told them that's why I need trans liberation so I don't need to worry about it at all. Grappling is a system of increasing control over someone. Correct genitals optional. If you're having fun and can be matched against an interesting opponent the rest can get fucked.
