The price of a baked potato at a restaurant is stupid high. Unless you don't have an hour. Then the price is completely reasonable. It sucks. But if you have an hour you can make a baked potato. Two even. And make them very unhealthy with toppings.

Cost per person $1.01

If you don't have an hour, you can make them faster. Microwave the potato for several minutes until fairly soft (poke a few holes in the skin first), then bake in the oven or airfryer to crisp up the skin and finish cooking it. Not quite as good as fully baked, but much quicker and less energy used. Also great for sweet potatoes.

Do you microwave the sweet potato dry? Or do you soak it in water first? I tend to wash them before cooking so I wS wondering if I should dry them out first or just put them straight into the microwave.

I pierce them with a knife a few times and then slather them in bacon fat and dust with salt. This is if I use a microwave or an oven. This is for potatoes or sweet potatoes. It gets that skin all nice and crispy.

I wouldn't feel a need to soak it, but I wouldn't worry if it's damp either, maybe just a quick pat dry with a kitchen towel. I feel like enough moisture would come out through the holes in the skin it wouldn't make much difference.

Lemmy's potato weekend, may it replace canned baked beans and its added sugar

Mmmm. Add some of those pickled jalapenos on there and I’d be happy

I'm supposed to limit the amount of rice I consume, so I will sometimes use a baked Japanese sweet potato as the base for a saucy stir-fry or braised dish.

I've been subbing in Greek yogurt for sour cream, and I no longer taste much difference. Some would call it blasphemy, of course. I've found that dried chives (unlike dried cilantro) work pretty well for sitchy-ashuns like this, too. Then there's a sprinkling of nutritional yeast and dried roman / parm, which... is a healthy but pitiful sub for that delicious-looking cheddar there, lol.

As for a fried bacon alt, luckily for me with my fridge still on the fritz, the local super recently put packs of uncured turkey bacon on sale, so I've been grabbing them up. $2.50 for a pack of 14 slices (3oz) where they're normally at ~$7. They store at room temp indefinitely, and kinda taste like a cross between fried bacon and jerky.

The image is enormous, so I don't want to paste it in:

EDIT: Maybe a solar oven to help replace the fuel / electric cost of one hour of oven's use?

I haven't seen shelf stable turkey bacon. I could see some utility in that.

I'd like to do a solar oven but in my research most of the designs are incapable of reaching the temperature needed to bake much of anything. The only real option that actually works is a rather expensive large fresnel lens based one.

I'm wondering how close it might get during the hot summers you have. Yeah, something to research...

An inverted lighthouse? That's interesting. Would look pretty cool, methinks.

Or maybe one-way tempered glass could work.

I think British people call them jacket potatoes because they’re secretly wearing potato skin jackets

Don't they have too much flavor for British people?

back when fast food was affordable I felt wendys was kinda the best of the chain places. when they had a dollar menu it had two types of side salad and a baked potato that came with sour cream and chives and chili with onions. you could have a pretty healthy lunch for 3 bucks.

I can't remember the last time I got a Wendy's baked potato. Probably more than 12 years ago. Probably the most "real" and least processed fast food item that ever existed.

Are our wives long-lost sisters? I married the original meat and potatoes girl.

She loved it so much she asked for it again today. I decided I need to change things up a bit but she said she needed it the same. So I'll make hers the same and do a very different version for mine.

My wife is definitely meat and potatoes. But occasionally demands raw veggies.
