Snip:

According to Israeli rights group Rabbis for Human Rights, Lander, the Democratic Party nominee for New York’s 10th congressional district, was accompanying Palestinian farmers during an olive harvest near Bethlehem and had been supporting them for around two hours when Israeli forces arrested him.

“I’ve been detained by the Israeli military, along with a group of rabbis & volunteers,” Lander said in a post on the social media platform X on Wednesday, sharing a picture of himself on a bus.

“We were simply harvesting olives in a grove” in the West Bank, he continued. “The occupation is a crime under international law. Harvesting olives isn’t a crime under any law I know.”

[...]

Lander, a political ally of New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani, has been critical of Israel’s genocidal war in Gaza that has killed more than 74,000 Palestinians and wounded over 175,000 others, while destroying around 90% of the civilian infrastructure in the besieged strip.

There is nothing redeeming about a liberal zionist going on a tour of the genocide he's funding.

But people here love and defend both him and Mamdani for doing nothing but upholding jewish supremacy, so I know me saying this is futile.

I have no love for Lander or Mamdani

But I'd rather have Lander been arrested by the IDF to do whatever this awareness raising action is than for him to not have done something

I would rather not have a german Nazi touring around a concentration camp for a photo op and then go back to talking about how Germans need their Lebensraum, but you do you, I guess.

  • pretty good move to create a context like this for diplomacy responses (reprisals) from the NYC political structure. i've seen the story in regular US media and even when they give the entity spokespeople room to comment, the apologia is clumsy as hell. like, "the activists didn't clear it with us ahead of time that they would be harvesting olives so close to settler fencing." lays out how ad-hoc and inconsistent the security forces are.
