On this day in 1837, in what has been described as "one of the most disgraceful acts in American military history", Seminole leader Osceola was captured by U.S. forces after he was tricked into meeting for "peace talks".

Osceola (in Creek, "Asi-yahola"; 1804 - 1838) was an influential leader of the Seminole people in Florida, in particular the Seminole resistance against colonization. Although he was raised in the Creek tradition, Osceola became part of what was known as the Seminole people after moving to Florida as a child.

Osceola's successful attack on military forces on December 28th, 1835 served as a catalyst for beginning the Second Seminole War against the United States. Although the Seminole was victorious in some of the battles of the Second Seminole War, it was on this day in 1837 that General Joseph Hernández captured Osceola, who had come to meet Hernández under the false promise of peace talks.

General Hernández had agreed to meet with Osceola under a white flag of truce, but promptly arrested Osceola and 81 of his followers. Osceola died from illness a few months after his capture, on January 30th, 1838.

feels weird to have presentations through zoom. Most of us can't afford strong internet and the regular blackouts accompanied by Burmese teachers usually being pretty unforgiving towards a student's condition, situation, or accommodations makes me a little worried of how these factors will affect our grades when I'm seeing and experiencing regular internet instability. It's a lot more noticeable in group projects when one person being disconnected can really disturb the group's flow. Then there's also the fact that some of us aren't lucky enough to afford a soundproofed or private room, which I'm worried might penalize our grades too

man i hate being born here thonk-cri

part of being in the third world or poc is that anything you say will be ignored due to the current word for "you're a savage", it took almost 80 years for Palestinian resistance to be taken half seriously, before this phase of the genocide and before white people learning sympathy about Palestinian they used to call us Islamo-fascists and whatever else for being against the zionist occupation and supporting the resistance.

Been called an "anti-semitic conspiracy theorist" all of my life, especially by the left, for just being anti-zionist while arab. It's literally why I stopped attending DSA meetings back when i was a bit squishier in 2016, someone called me that to my face when I proposed that we support BDS.

"Leftist" yet they prioritize the feelings of one of the most privileged, coddled, and protected groups over even the slightest gestures of anti-imperialism

    Sounds about white

Death to the empire, and that includes its "leftists"

White "leftists" consider antisemitism to be a super special and magical form of discrimination and hatred that exceeds all others and that permeates the fabric of everything like the higgs field. They think it's some kind of dark magic brain virus that is so powerful that if you're not constantly looking under the bed for phantom antisemitism, you'll be wearing a swastika armband and sieg-heiling before you know it. This unfalsifiable orthodoxy has reached such a point that they are labeling self-declared genocidal Jewish supremacists "antisemitic" because the real tragedy is that the children of their victims will grow up to hate Jews. The Holocaust (but only including Jews) is the only actual genocide and is the lens through which all others must be analyzed.

and they still have the gall to call Hamas terrorists for actually fighting back against a genocide in the year 2026. Privileged westerners who have never known struggle or the erasure and mass oppression of their own still continue to think they have the right to talk down to Palestinian resistance while reserving all their empathy for the baby-killing fascist scum of the IOF

"Progressive" white women around me irl at least aren't even pretending to care about any social issue besides anything that benefits white women as a group lmao as usual my history teacher being uber racist, today it was "cape verdeans are seen as the most desirable and physically attractive africans because they have one if not the highest % of european dna that distinguishes them from other africans" with 0 pushback from the 20+ white students present btw. Yes all whites, death to every single one.

The island is formed mostly by a mix of slaves and their white portuguese owners akaremoved which they always glide over as being consensual so most people are lighter and can even have blue and green eyes, so to euros this makes them "less" poc therefore "more beautiful". Kill all euros now.

Oh the concept of being third culture as my ethnic identity is permanently locked out from being accepted in my home culture and my ethnic identity i am locked out of because of my home culture is giving me a sense of homelessness

Just going to spin these thoughts out, see if they go anywhere.

I think about culture as a living thing. So my ethnic identity is imprinted by the signifiers not just of my parents, but the diaspora. The anxieties here, more over come from this feeling of vulnerability. We are a small group, though in actual fact, we are not. But we’re so unorganized and fractured. What they carry, what they build, do they remain a reflection of the mother culture? Or the new home culture?

What i see from the last generation (ie my parents) of the diaspora doesnt quite reflect what I saw from the previous generation (grandparents and godparents), the one that helped the last settle and eventually raise us. Instead is a “boomerfication” has gone on. Also, there’s no culture i can think of they have to pass on. Certainly song and recipes, but not what THEY specifically made. It’s like being human had to sit in a holding pattern while trying to make life work here. There’s a generation of music from the radio, but it felt like that boomerfication had to happen earlier, as they seem to more quickly enter the state of reflecting on days they had more freedom. Perhaps this explains how quickly television became a habit? We can watch a tv show in a home language and enjoy themselves after a week of hard work. This can explain how primed they were to exposure to conservative programming. An idea worth following but not for now to explore.

The culture of our parents also becomes our culture, but it cant be the repeating of stories and songs, culture will beget more culture. But meanwhile the home country has been moving on, and the diaspora have themselves a reflection of a familiar world they recognize, which is drifting from the home culture, as people age out, as new things come and go. Eventually the culture you recognize is not the relevant culture, and just like your parents with their culture, you cant recognize you or your place in it.

Eventually the past you know is a key to a lock that got changed. For you, for me, the case is, in all the time i was away from the home culture, it changed, so when i go to see it, it had less or even none of the markers i was made to be familiar with. Home is less familiar. There can be good or bad, but it’s important that this change is noted.

The next thing is realizing every member of the diaspora has with them a different photograph (or something far far less detailed like a rubbing) they carry with them that was the familiar world they hail from. Then they raise children on that fading picture, and they meet other members of the diaspora, and perhaps they try to compare notes. Neither understand the different regions have radically different ideas in cuisine, in art, in expression. There’s a case that all one can know is the food. It kinda makes you doubt if the connection you made would be strong enough to find it your home too. You may doubt your connection to that home. And it’s worse if you dont find a sense of home here.

Some parts of america have the homely vibes of a bus station, serving only to hold you between locations, with all the invitation you’d expect to find when the shops inside all closed.

    New Connected Thought

So I was reminded of seeing tiktoks of Chinese-Americans offended over the “Chinese time in my life” thing, and going over their experiences as a chinese person, except the semantic trick that they are not a Chinese person, but a Chinese-American, they were mistaking the ethnic group for culture and country, whatever whatever.

Cant imagine what they feel like, except the american tag disqualifying their participation into the meme. Like “you know they’re not talking about you”.

But then i realize i have that same weird claim to my own ethnic culture, in that’s it’s mine but I’m disconnected from the entirely different thing it is. If suddenly my ethnic culture became the trend du jour and people talked specifically about the country, I wouldnt always be able to immediately recognize things because I didnt grow up IN there. I would be learning with everyone else, even though this culture was supposedly mine.

At the very least, they too can have a very Chinese time in their life, it would probably make them more fulfilled than being “-american”

I hope people find this as funny as I did.

    Hanging out with anarchists and:

Cis white guy: I would rather we have another Obama than Trump

Me, brown trans woman with immigrant parents: idk how much that matters, I mean Obama set the stage for Trump, and was far more competent at running the empire. I'm enjoying watching the US empire own itself under Trump.

His cis white girlfriend turns to me: yeah, that's a pretty privileged position to have.

I was so surprised by her having the audacity to say that to my face (well, to my mask, everyone else wants to pretend Covid is over) that I couldn't even respond before the conversation had moved on. Yes, it's very privileged to recognize that no matter how bad I have it as a brown trans 2nd generation immigrant, people in the third world are more precarious and in more danger from the US Empire so what benefits them matters more. It's very privileged to be willing to take on worse adversity at home for the betterment of the world. It is not privileged to go "me me me what about me I'm so scared of what Trump will do to me, a cis white american woman, we have to center my safety here, it's really privileged to think about the third world"

American chauvinists cannot be trusted and cannot be considered leftists even if they say they are. Also why do anarchists who supposedly respect no nation keep defaulting to american chauvinism? Obviously it's plain selfishness but I don't see MLs doing that

Anarchists sit in a weird place. They’re radicalized enough to reject capitalism but they still buy the empire’s lies, so they end up in a confusing position where it’s hard to be consistent or have a coherent worldview

Things seemed better under Obama, when Americans didn’t have to pay attention to the bombing in Iraq and could pretend everything was fine at home. Trump makes America look like a country of selfish, evil assholes and that’s when people miss being able to ignore reality

Maybe this is why I keep finding anarchists and then being confused about whether they are actually anarchists or are radlibs or are liberals who learned a few words without knowing the theory or context behind them.

Nothing surprises me anymore, but it doesn't make it any less disgusting that people are angrier at genocide denier, Ethan Kline, for cheating on his IDF wife than they were for him being a genocide denier or his wife being a foot soldier for the genocidal entity.

I was talking to an American expat today who said he was a missionary in Brazil for 20 years and really supported Lula. He then went on to disparage Bolsonaro and his supporters, genuinely struggling to understand what made them so hateful. Keep in mind he was an evangelical missionary during his 20 years there.

There’s a term for people bemoaning the problem they helped create that escapes me.

So I’ve been watching the newest Avatar (Seven Havens), and some people call it too wokeTM. In my opinion, it’s not woke enough.

The core tension of the first season so far seems inspired by the classic dilemma between a free market and a planned economy that limits people’s choices. Since the writers are American, you can guess which path they’re going to take

The orientalism is stronger here since they made metaphysical all the social conflict in the show. Westerners cannot imagine class conflict without the devil coming alive and zapping everyone.

Whites have a long history of torturing and killing innocents in the most brutal way and act like Aztec sacrifices were the same. They did it for religious purposes and didn’t derive pleasure out of impaling women like the Europeans often did.

The imperialist first world refuses to allow humane working conditions for people in the cobalt mines in the Congo, to keep down the prices of treats, of tablets of phones and computer parts, but are completely fine with tripling prices for the sake of data centers. So to my fellow third worlders out there: our lives are worth less than AI sexbots.
