On this day in 1837, in what has been described as "one of the most disgraceful acts in American military history", Seminole leader Osceola was captured by U.S. forces after he was tricked into meeting for "peace talks".

Osceola (in Creek, "Asi-yahola"; 1804 - 1838) was an influential leader of the Seminole people in Florida, in particular the Seminole resistance against colonization. Although he was raised in the Creek tradition, Osceola became part of what was known as the Seminole people after moving to Florida as a child.

Osceola's successful attack on military forces on December 28th, 1835 served as a catalyst for beginning the Second Seminole War against the United States. Although the Seminole was victorious in some of the battles of the Second Seminole War, it was on this day in 1837 that General Joseph Hernández captured Osceola, who had come to meet Hernández under the false promise of peace talks.

General Hernández had agreed to meet with Osceola under a white flag of truce, but promptly arrested Osceola and 81 of his followers. Osceola died from illness a few months after his capture, on January 30th, 1838.

I hope people find this as funny as I did.

Hanging out with anarchists and:

Cis white guy: I would rather we have another Obama than Trump

Me, brown trans woman with immigrant parents: idk how much that matters, I mean Obama set the stage for Trump, and was far more competent at running the empire. I'm enjoying watching the US empire own itself under Trump.

His cis white girlfriend turns to me: yeah, that's a pretty privileged position to have.

I was so surprised by her having the audacity to say that to my face (well, to my mask, everyone else wants to pretend Covid is over) that I couldn't even respond before the conversation had moved on. Yes, it's very privileged to recognize that no matter how bad I have it as a brown trans 2nd generation immigrant, people in the third world are more precarious and in more danger from the US Empire so what benefits them matters more. It's very privileged to be willing to take on worse adversity at home for the betterment of the world. It is not privileged to go "me me me what about me I'm so scared of what Trump will do to me, a cis white american woman, we have to center my safety here, it's really privileged to think about the third world"

American chauvinists cannot be trusted and cannot be considered leftists even if they say they are. Also why do anarchists who supposedly respect no nation keep defaulting to american chauvinism? Obviously it's plain selfishness but I don't see MLs doing that

Anarchists sit in a weird place. They’re radicalized enough to reject capitalism but they still buy the empire’s lies, so they end up in a confusing position where it’s hard to be consistent or have a coherent worldview

Things seemed better under Obama, when Americans didn’t have to pay attention to the bombing in Iraq and could pretend everything was fine at home. Trump makes America look like a country of selfish, evil assholes and that’s when people miss being able to ignore reality

Maybe this is why I keep finding anarchists and then being confused about whether they are actually anarchists or are radlibs or are liberals who learned a few words without knowing the theory or context behind them.
