The FOSS option was released a week ago.

    Nearby Glasses

    https://f-droid.org/packages/ch.pocketpc.nearbyglasses/

    * Note: I have not tested this with actual glasses. Read the disclaimers about usage too.

Jesus Christ man how do devs not even try to hide AI usage anymore. From the thumbnail alone of this article, I zoom in, and I can immediately tell it's Gemini that made this UI. Literally the cut-and-paste style it uses. It's getting ridiculous

a free Apple iOS app called Zuckoff

I’m sure some of you will take issue but this is NOT a free app. There are in app purchases for more features. Free means it’s all free.

Yes, but who wants to be staring at their phone all the time.

Maybe they could make a smart glass-app to warn about smart glasses.

A lot of us have, because we use them to communicate synchronously. I get why many people don't, but it's not like it were only boomers.

Besides that, I get money for being reachable, and use that to buy food and stuff.

So do I, but having a phone != available for communication all the time.

Besides that, I get money for being reachable, and use that to buy food and stuff.

Well, yeah that's what my work phone is for but I wouldn't ever install private stuff on that, and also my above point. And it gets turned off when I sign out.

  • Same for me, but besides work, I communicate with friends and I am there for them if they need me. My phone is muted at night and work is only when working or when I'm on call.

Last week the garage and my complex burnt down and me and the neighbors are helping the people without homes and cars. I'm available for them.

This article seemed to be partially a pitch for camera-less smart-glasses... which I'm okay with. Camera-less smart glasses would be nice to have. Just give me wearOS for my face.

As long as they're also mic less. You can do just as much privacy invading with an open mic.

Ehh, phones have mics, and most people have a phone in their pocket these days. If you're walking around in public, you should know that there is likely a mic nearby, so you should act accordingly. I'm not condoning public recording, it's just the world we live in. Look up your local laws, some places require both parties' consent for recording (honestly unrealistic these days but can be helpful in court), and some places only require one party's consent (meaning people are allowed to record their conversations with you without telling you).

Remember not to incriminate yourself. It's good to know when to be quiet.

Seems a lot less useful without a mic though, and it's super easy to hide a mic without smart glasses. The camera is only problematic because it's otherwise really hard to hide one on your person.

smartwatches are useful for taking calls and responding to texts, and I don't see a difference between a smartwatch on your face and one on your wrist

Every technology is useful if it isn't used malevolently. Alas, they are, so personally, I avoid them. Maybe at some point smart glasses will be compatible with something like GadgetBridge and I'll be able to revisit them and teach people to use them more ethically. Just like smart watches.

Can we just wrap up this arc and get to the part where meta lets anyone opt into a "Smart Blur" function which prevents them from being recorded on Meta Glasses, but you have to set up a Facebook account with recent pictures of yourself for it to work?

Is there no way in which these technological marvels will not surpass us average joes?
