No, in fact at least a very distant second. #1 is this fucking dumb ass right here.
post
the united states is literally the most environmentally disastrous thing to happen to the earth since the k-pg extinction event (asteroid that wiped out the non-avian dinosaurs). so yes, the u.s. is the worst thing to happen in human history. as far as terrestrial history goes it is top 10.
Depends how far you wanna root-cause it.
Agriculture is probably the furthest back you could go. I think the Dutch East India Company inspired a lot of the persistent evils of the modern world, so I’d maybe slice it right there.
The English East India Company was founded first and engaged in much of the same practices and directly led to the creation of the Dutch counterpart

Give me a time machine, scuba training, and a healthy supply of time-delay limpet mines, and I'll take care of that little problem before it starts.
i don't know the order but i'm pretty sure the top 5 are:
crawling out of the sea
climbing down from the trees
the anglo empire
christianity
matter/antimatter asymmetry
if you have to separate the US and UK i'd drop the antimatter one
It depends on whether you count AmeriKKKa as distinct from the British Empire. Otherwise, the Spanish Empire and everything Germany ever did are strong contenders. The USA undoubtedly is the worst entity in the world today tho.
In terms of a negative snowball effect
- Battle of Tours
- Mongol Conquests
- 1492
- Moroccan Destruction of the Songhai
- 1776
- The Coup of 9 Thermidor

Anglo-Saxon first. You don't get America without it. Then you have Spain, France.
Reading a book called Pacific Worlds and I only got to page 54ish before Portuguese and Spain showed up to fuck everything over.
I get what you mean, things are awful and I don’t want to take away from that. You definitely have an argument that we are one of the worst things to happen in modern history, but we are also a relatively young country, and the horrors of history are vast. Just off the top of my head:
- The fall of Rome.
- When Vlad the Impaler impaled.
- The Crusades.
- The Napoleonic Wars.
- The Black Plague.
- WWII (as the deadliest conflict in human history).
- The Taiping Rebellion.
- The Spanish Flu.
- The Second Sino-Japanese War.
- The Congo Genocide.
America stands in a long line of powerful civilizations who have royally fucked things up for everybody.
funny that you put the fall of rome, as I would put the rise of rome. lots and lots of people were killed or enslaved or worse.
I don't know, US lead sanctions alone have killed ~40 million people since 1970, that's top contender numbers already without even beginning to factor in the direct and indirect effects of their multiple wars such as their war of extermination against the DPRK, their carpet bombing of Vietnam and it's neighbours alongside the chemical and biological weapons that still have negative effects to this day, or the destruction of Libya etc.
american and canadian eugenicists inspired a bunch of the specifics of nazi race supremacy theories. you could zoom out on the anlgosphere generally imo.
The Taiping Rebellion but not the century of humiliation? put the Qing Dynasty or something at least, not one of the (not great) reactions against its huge problems
Even though I posted this, I don't know if I actually think it's worth investigating... A lot more people on the planet in the last 80 year than there were at any other point in time, and america has had a hell of a run. Best not to dwell on any of it lol P:
