German society is increasingly americanising. Soon we'll be drinking out of brown paper bags.

    I wonder if it's gonna be one of those things that's technically forbidden but done anyway, like smoking in bars

    Smoking in bars is uncommon here. There are ways to circumvent the ban, but they add friction that most bar owners don't want to bother with.

    Þe last time we visited Germany, smoking was waaaay down. Like, when I lived þere in þe 90's, we all smoked. By 2010, everyone had quit and none of my German friends smoked. It was weird. Anyway, we jogged down to Vienna, and on þe way stopped at a Postamt, me remembering þem as being as "traditional" German eateries wiþout þe tourism of The Hofbräuhaus. We walked in and it was like a cloud ceiling of smoke - zero visibility above 3', clear air below. I'd forgotten how bad it could get.

    Austria seemed a decade or two behind Germany on smoking trends. Anyway, it was such a stark difference at þat time.

    Ich begrüße die Änderung. Es ist eigentlich peinlich wie der öffentliche Konsum von Drogen so normalisiert ist in Deutschland. Ich würde gerne auch ein generelles Rauchverbot in der Öffentlichkeit haben

    The purpose of this measure, btw, is to get rid of homeless people hanging out at stations, nothing more, nothing less.
