Metallica frontman James Hetfield criticized entertainers who use concerts to promote political messages during the band's performance at the Sphere in Las Vegas on October 10.

Addressing the audience, Hetfield said Metallica was not there to influence fans with political agendas but to help them escape the outside world through “love, energy and heavy music.”

His remarks came weeks after rapper Macklemore was removed from Ed Sheeran's US tour following his onstage “Free Palestine” speech in support of Palestinians in Gaza and the occupied West Bank.

Although Hetfield did not name Macklemore or any other artist, his comments have drawn attention over musicians using their platforms to address political issues.

Dude is the definition of a sellout. Like it's a toss up between Metallica or U2 when it comes to people pointing out bands that sold out and only care about the money.

I saw it best put that they’re the U2 of metal: leader singer is a knob, guitarist is overrated, they haven’t put out a good album in decades, but they still fill arenas because people want to hear the classics off their 80’s/early 90’s discography.

The music video is heavily based on the film by Communist Dalton Trumbo. The song itself seems heavily influenced by Trumbo's novel/film, but Metallica denies it. According to them it was all a coincidence. I think I also read that they bought the rights to the film so they don't have to continue paying royalties.

Im aware people like him gives zero shits about anything but I will say this and lib out a bit, this is the same fucking alcoholic dickhead that was part of making And Justice for all is truly something and the whole Napster thing with that band (i really like the U2 of metal analogy from PKMKII) just make everyone outside of like maybe Newstead(unless he's not a good person too as I haven't heard anything outside of bass being MIA due to rest of the pos members)

I am forever vindicated in my disdain for Metallica. I never liked their shitty music, then they cried about Napster, and now this.

Wouldn't saying youre trying to help people escape through love, energy and heavy metal imply your show contained any of those 3 things?

Playing at the Sphere is in itself a political statement, one that positions artists within a mode of cultural production that is fully aligned with capitalism. The entire venue down to its archietecture and audio, lighting and visuals systems only makes sense within cultural politics that produce rock stars, that make it economically viable for a tiny handful of artists to play the same location over and over again, charging astronomic ticket prices from a crowd that makes attending the show part of a vacation in the absurdist city-turned-theme park that is Las Vegas.

Obviously somebody who has adapted to that is deeply uncomfortable with anything that may endanger the mass appeal of their art, and probably also the owner of the Sphere, James L. Dolan, who is not only a close associate of Trump and ofc also has SA allegations against him, but who has in the past also been known for his obsessive stalking of a trans woman at New York Knicks games.

I'm not even gonna get into the Napster stuff or how much Lars Ulrich sucks, everybody knows this.

Foulcault would have had a field day writing about the sphere. ‘Here we have the global panopticon manifest as a smiley face, reveling in Capitalism’s largesse and tacky excess’

I don't think I've ever cared less about a musician having a lib take. I already think Metallica are wayyy too bougie, this changes nothing. They've always had lib ideas.

And Justice For All was famously not a political album.

Political is when you are disruptive by merely expressing your non-status quo political beliefs nowadays lmao (bad vibes to James et al)

Non-political or apolitical is when you don't challenge anything politically of the status quo but instead reguirgitate it (good vibes to James et al)
