WASHINGTON (AP) — Federal agents searched Democratic U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar’s home on Monday morning as part of a criminal investigation, according to people familiar with the matter. The search was conducted by Homeland Security Investigations agents, said the two people, who were not authorized to publicly discuss an ongoing investigation and spoke on the condition of anonymity. More details about the investigation were not immediately clear.

An email seeking comment was sent Monday to a representative for Omar. The Justice Department said in a statement Monday that HSI agents executed a judicially authorized search warrant secured by the department in the Washington, D.C., area but provided no other details. “This enforcement action is part of an ongoing federal criminal investigation,” the department said.

Omar, 44, represents Minnesota’s 5th District, including Minneapolis. She was first elected to the House in 2018 and has been known as a member of what’s called The Squad of female lawmakers known for their progressive views and pointed opposition to the Republican president.

Ilhan Omar

I’m ok. Make no mistake: this is an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement. For ten years, Trump has targeted me with baseless lies and smear campaigns. This is just the latest escalation in his campaign of political intimidation.

I will not be silenced.

I honestly believe every congressman has built their own personal laundry list of financial crimes they could and should get arrested for, but those crimes only become public when enough of their fellow congressmen hate them and it's politically viable. I'd have limited sympathy in that case, although it's objectively bad that racism is a factor at all in crossing that line. If the blurb citing fox news is correct though, that this is over her dad filling out some immigration forms wrong, then that's super fucked.

When I was living in Detroit I heard from a friend involved with local elections (I think she's trustworthy, but the game of telephone to get to her ear was too long for me to say it's gospel) that some workers associated with Tlaib's campaign got very disillusioned by how overtly corrupt she was. I both believe this and still think she might be the best congressman in the US.

Trump has been Islamophobic against Ilhan Omar for a long time. Some of you have heard the Trump clip where he says "may allah awaken the people" and might not know that he was quoting Ilhan Omar.

If DSA is actually threatening the power structure in the US then their progressive candidates and elects will probably get arrested soon.

I just saw this at Bluesky.

Not sure I have great faith in the Dem leadership defending her.

Jfc will you ever accept that the GOP and Republicans and Trump have agency? They are not some immutable law of nature - they are actively choosing to be evil. Focus on them!

Homeland Security Investigations was able to secure significant evidence confirming the suspect has dark skin, is a woman, and is a muslim. This confirms the worst fears of the investigation. An arrest is expected to follow.

If liberals weren't allergic to winning and using power they could've used this as Casus belli whenever they won power to absolutely fucking gut the Republican Party by investigating every member of their party-machine from federal to local and pulling every single one of them out if their seats to drag them through the mud and into a prison cell.
