Big Win

Socialist commentator Piker has been building his audience for close to a decade, becoming by far the most prominent political voice on Twitch. “My job is to snap people out of [their] stupor,” Piker tells Vanity Fair. On seven-hour daily livestreams, the six-foot-four creatine-taking former frat bro rails against corporate greed and explains things like the Strait of Hormuz in the memeified idiom of his followers, who are mostly white, male, and always online. “[Twitch] is the seedy underbelly of entertainment,” Piker says. The site, intended mostly for gamers, is fringe even by internet standards. But at a moment when the Democratic Party is desperate for, if not its own Joe Rogan, at least one even minorly cool spokesperson, Piker’s success is both instructive and rare. In the past year, Piker’s profile has risen well beyond the digital underworld—think big-league invitations (the Democratic National Convention; this magazine’s Oscar party) and campaign appearances for candidates in the new socialist guard. Piker swears he doesn’t sow controversy on purpose but admits all the attention has boosted his clout. “At the peak of the Iran war, Fox News was running eight stories a day on me,” Piker recalls. With some self-satisfaction, he adds: “They called Jimmy Kimmel the Hasan Piker of ABC, which is insane.”

Achilles’ heel

“America deserved 9/11.” That’s a real thing Piker said during an August 2019 stream, endlessly clipped and quoted. And—surprise—it doesn’t play well. Piker has further stated a preference for Hamas over the Israeli government, called the Hezbollah flag “dope,” and joked that Orthodox Jewish Israelis are “inbred.” He seldom apologizes. Piker’s acerbic brand tests the edges of acceptability. An April bipartisan congressional resolution condemned Piker’s “antisemitic hate-filled rhetoric.” Two months later, the UK Home Office denied Piker entry into the country, citing concerns about public well-being. Freewheeling rhetoric is probably the very thing that made Piker popular, but it has also spawned an unending meta-debate about his legitimacy.

WHAT’S NEXT

As the latest round of Piker backlash crested, Michigan’s Abdul El-Sayed (#40) said he had “no plans” to campaign with his one-time surrogate. For 2028, Piker has his eye on Georgia senator Jon Ossoff (#39) and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (#17). When asked if he’s scared of doing more harm than good, Piker answered quickly: “No, not even a little bit.”—Abigail Sylvor Greenberg

I find this bit to be one of the most weird and hilarious, it's such pure civility liberalism:

This same thing is one of the main things my local national news shitpiece of Piker focused on, and we are not even in the US. Adding how terrible it is that "he didn't even apologize".

Oh my god the words, the terrible hurtful words that have been said and not even apologized for! Never mind all the corpses produced by usaian imperialism.

It's such pure undistilled liberalism. chefs-kiss

America (the nation) deserved 9/11 for its decades of imperial abuses and neocolonialism that immiserated and murdered tens of millions, but what they want the average empty-headed chauvinist to think he is saying is that the actual Americans who died deserved it, which is a much stronger and less supportable statement.

I feel about each of those victims exactly the way they would have felt about one of the half-million Iraqi children who died due to US sanctions.

Hasan is 6'4"? damn, that dude is big.

now, if he was born with hundreds of millions of dollars worth of real estate and banking connections in manhattan, he could be president.

Political power grows out of the barrel of the gun, so the most powerful of the year, all years, is obviously comrade Michael Timofijev Kalashnikov. ground-pog

Keep on Streisand effecting him. Please normalize mocking and shitting on the empire. For every one that is outraged by Hasan we will gain two or three who think that shit is dope .

Of course a magazine based on talking about briefly famous people would conflate power with brief fame and being talked about. shrug-outta-hecks It's all very silly.

You know who else came into power through vanity popculture?

    Trump

It may have helped with brand recognition in primaries etc but vanity popculture didn't put Trump in power, it was a combination of political connections, a lifetime of political dirt on others, vast wealth, and the backing of an enormously vast, infinitely deep-pocketed, and more than 50 year in the making far right political project. Plus potentially a multinational blackmail intelligence op. Plus Trump was plenty famous when he couldn't secure the Reform party ticket to run for President in 2000.

Xi is more important than powerful because while he is integral to Chinese administration, executive power isn't completely vested in him like it is in USA or other capitalist liberal democracies. Though that's me, they just consider Chinese people orcs which is why no Chinese leader is considered at all.

Man with a video camera more powerful than man in control of Armageddon weapons. Interesting.

If "powerful" means "the media hyperfixates on you and shoehorns you into every conversation like a special interest because zionist donors want to make you a wedge issue" then sure, that might be accurate.

Hasan himself said it was because they are afraid of his potential influence in the 2028 elections. They are ratcheting up the islamophobia scary joker-laden ads here in Michigan, who elected HUSSIEN twice obama-medal

Mike Dodger Rogers brought out his nayirah-testimony campus douchebag.

Persian KKKristian gusano son, Iman Dashti, whose only lines are mommy and daddy had to run from ebil Islam in 1979 because we can't mention 1953 and and and I could have been something besides an idiot for hire. All Muslims are Bin Laden.

Also ignore Trump's personal and family enrichment off the Saudis. Also ignore Bin Laden being CIA stooge in Afghanistan 1979. Just slander and falsely accuse El Sayed of being Al Queda and Muslim Brotherhood with 6 degrees of Kevin Bacon.

    CW islamophobia extreme

I have put out the take that El-Sayed will be the president-after-the-next, assuming he pulls through next month. He is not a socialist, and i dont necessarily endorse him (we will get there when we get there), this is just a prediction.

Part of the reason I am predicting this is because all the Islamophobia attacks will be baked in to his senate campaign and term. They won't have anything left to juice in '32. Barack Hussein Obama was president, so why not?

El-Sayed is equally charismatic as Obama and has better policies. People on here can rail on him for succdemmery when he gets into office as a senator, but thats beside the point.
