M1 just for the battery life alone. When I was in school I would've killed for a laptop with m1/2/3 battery life. Outlet hunting constantly is a pain. And the m1 benches considerably higher vs the i7 4980. You'll find it more then worth for that extra 4~500.

In most cases I would not buy a device that is already out of support. The 2015 MacBook has not been able to get updates for a while now. I think it is stuck at macOS 12 and the current version is 14. So the M1 Air would be my pick here for both security and longevity of the device.
