When I was studying in Taiwan I met at least a few students who were very thin, and they said that they were only eating enough to stay under the minimum weight requirement for conscription. Overall I didn't meet many people who seemed willing to fight the PLA, despite Kaohsiung also being a more "green" (DPP, separatist) area.
