Makes sense. There's been a lot of commentary over the years that after Nixon Republicans decided that their principles could never get in the way of holding power again.

And they're run by ghouls on life support who still care about the 70's.

the US let an insurrection off, he should have been in a federal jail for life but you then rewarded him with the presidency... again. If there are no consequences for a bully physcopath, all you've done is let them know that behaviour is ok.

he said he could shoot some random and hed het away with it and he's right

This shows that they aren't concerned about what's coming and are just rewriting history.

It will be interesting to see how much more weird shit people will believe by 2028 if the human race makes it that long

There is a sincere and legitimate argument that the Watergate burglars deliberately took a dive to throw Nixon under the bus. He'd already pissed off both the CIA and FBI at this point, and many within his own party were turning on him due to his unpopularity.

Trump's not the guy to make this argument, of course. But it does get into the Cold War politics of the era and Nixon's Third Way strategy of detente for the benefit of his millionaire allies.

The Cold Warriors would eventually hijack the federal government entirely through Reagan/Bush in '80. But back in the 60s/70s there was still a meaningful divide between business goons and military maniacs.

Conservatives still see absolutely nothing at all wrong with Nixon's behavior. They even glorify it in their music and their political commentary. Cheating in elections and spying on American citizens is completely fine in their eyes (as long as it's conservatives doing it).

It's almost like conservatives are pure evil and should be completely excluded from normal society.

Nixon was the beginning of the right-wing coup against America. Roger Ailes (the Fox News aka Unofficial Propaganda Network guy) was Nixon's media aide. Redid his image from his 1960 loss. Key to the coup.

It's interesting that they're choosing to rehabilitate him now. It's a weird card to play.

If you believe, as I do, that fascist movements are more or less a forest fire, and that "grievances" are the fuel for that fire, then "rehab Nixon" is really "mine the Nixon issue for grievance fuel."

And if they're down to playing this card, they're running low on fuel.

I don't disagree Nixon was huge but I think it goes from before that.

I personally really think it started directly at the start with the creation of the political parties, something Washington foresaw but also the establishment of America by the wealthy slave owning elite made this direction inevitable. But we could argue a lot about that.

Andrew Johnson's presidency and the assassination of Lincoln left scars that never healed and created the mould that I think the conservative base still stems from. Ever heard that quote "the poor see themselves not as an exploited proletariat, but as temporarily embarrassed millionaires" I really think there's a weirdo psychic hole these people experienced without even being fully aware. A lot of them come from former slave owning rich families and that underlying knowledge they used to have wealth did something to them.

You can also look at the wannabe coup against FDR, the Business Plot, rich fucks basically wanted to overthrow FDR.

Those three things to me really set the groundwork and then marches in Allen Dulles and his CIA. In a conversation with Charles de Gaulle, JFK admitted he didn't have control over the intelligence apparatus which was plotting to assassinate de Gaulle.

Then marches in Nixon and not soon after Reagan. The culture divide from the dawn of America, the humiliated and now destitute former slave owners with generational anger, the tycoons and their confidence to plot and peel away at democracy, a compromised intelligence apparatus with a black budget likely stemming from drug and human trafficking which they are in charge of investigating.

Suddenly the whole scene is set. The wealthy get their Epsteins, their cocaine, the means to hide it, the political pawns to support it and an ignorant, desperate base to use as their voting bloc. Gerrymandering only makes it all too easy especially with the broken representation system where smaller populations literally have more voting weight.

Government transparency, wealth distribution and strong social safety nets to reinforce education and healthcare, ranked voting, an end to gerrymandering and a heavy blow to how votes matter are, to me, the first steps to start fixing some of this shit.

I agree they're running low on fuel. But a cornered rat and all that.

Imagine the changes if we could end gerrymandering, and make the house truly representative population wise as it was meant to be. It's not some magic bullet that would solve everything, but it would help set the path forward.

Alas, the Senate intentionally does not provide equal representation and skews to more power for smaller states, so that would be a harder fix I think between the three.

LOL, I've been saying for years and years that cons have a deep, simmering resentment about Nixon. I'd hear old assholes - think the parents of boomers - bitching about Nixon getting what they thought was a raw deal, because "liberal media".

I cannot tell you how many extremist right wingers and reactionary centrists would try to deny what I was saying.

And here we have it....people that were not even alive back then are still holding a grudge about it, like "JD" "Vance".

Who GAF about the fact that Nixon definitely was involved in these crimes and taped himself covering it up, it was The Deep State(TM), ROTFLMAO.

Fine, “delegitimize” the prosecutors and “clear” Nixon (he was never actually prosecuted due to Ford’s pardon). We’ll expand the supreme court, who will rule that because he was “cleared”, the pardon is null and void. Further, they’ll rule that because he was never prosecuted, double jeopardy doesn’t apply.

Then we can appoint a special prosecutor and convene a new grand jury to go after him and all the co-conspirators new and old for real this time. Dig up that rotten corpse and we’ll make the trial of Richard Nixon part of Reconstruction 2.0.

    Under Ford's photo it says,

"He narrowly lost reelection to Jimmy Carter, probably because of his brave Pardon of Richard Nixon"

    "brave"

A perfect move, this will surely raise his approval rating.

I also think, why not make it illegal to vote against him? One party, one truth.
