The latest round of the COVID-19 epidemic in China has peaked and plateaued, with the upward trend now markedly slowing, the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention said on Thursday.

The country reported 522,000 confirmed infections last month, including 487 severe cases and one related death, compared to 79,000 total cases in June.

All tested infection samples were identified as the Omicron variant, with the NB.1.8.1 strain and its sublineages dominant in circulation.

The China CDC said COVID-19 has now become a common respiratory infectious disease, and the country is expected to experience one to two epidemic waves each year.

The current outbreak remains a routine, periodic fluctuation, with intensity comparable to that of the previous two years.

The upward trajectory has noticeably slowed, and the epidemic is now at a peak plateau, with signs of fluctuation.

The China CDC added that the severity of the disease has not changed, with the vast majority of infections presenting as mild cases. The elderly and individuals with chronic underlying conditions continue to face a higher risk of severe illness, though targeted and effective therapeutic options remain available.

Surveillance has detected no variants of major public health concern, and the recent wave has not caused any significant disruption to the overall medical system.

Disappointing to read this. I know in Asia masking is much more normalized than anywhere else, but still sad to see China promoting that its "mild" and a "common respiratory disease" we hear of in the West, when they don't have an incentive to do that. And I've read recently of studies coming out of China about Covid and they're very insightful.. Do the Shanghai libs really have that much influence? Extremely disheartening to not see AES even care about Covid anymore. Aside from the DPRK to my knowledge

Imagine living somewhere where covid is still acknowledged.

I'vI does feel invalidating to even see AES states not care about Covid :/ makes me feel very alienated, no clue how Cuba is doing, though they have bigger things to worry about

They probably have a shortage of that as well. Death to amerikkka. It does slightly make me insecure and wonder if I'm making it tf up seeing AES not care this much about this, but in due time I assume people will get to care about Covid as with other issues, sighs

Nah, I feel ya. But like my post the other day, something is messing people up. Even if we're all delusional in this comm, something is wrong and better to be safe than sorry.

Though if you wanna see some "oh, am I losing my mind?" kinda shit. I just went looking through my comments for a site I've used previously showing death rates and how we're still significantly above 2019 and found the comment I made with the screenshot 4 months ago:

    https://www.macrotrends.net/global-metrics/countries/usa/united-states/death-rate

But that's not what the graph looks like anymore. They've smoothed their data out so it no longer shows the spike of deaths from covid! catgirl-hiss

I do wonder if over time the long term impacts of COVID lessen, as the virus continues to mutate.

Or if they're getting worse and we just don't know it yet.

Only time will tell. It doesn't feel like a risk worth finding out for

The fact that COVID was normalized for political economic reasons and then science around it deprioritized, along with no studies suggesting the virus itself is particularly less harmful in any of its wave variants means it is basically just as bad as it has ever been but vaccines and mass death have made the most extreme outcomes less common.

Folks want to call it endemic to normalize it even but it still doesn't fit basic public health criteria for what it means to be endemic. Infection rates don't have a basic seasonal pattern, for example - waves are about new variants burning through the population as they arise.

People are still constantly sick with "the bug that's going around" and it takes them out for like a week and related chronic illnesses are still at elevated rates. The overall elevated mortality rate has not resumed pre-2020 levels either.

The comparison a bunch of sciencey folks were throwing around a few years ago is that it takes HIV around 10 years to develop into AIDS. We're still like only 7 years into Covid, and beyond just the me/cfs people are experiencing (along with the organ damage stuff, etc), there's been data suggesting that Covid may kick off Alzheimer's and Parkinsons. And that's just off the top of my head, I know there's been others.

I've heard this too, but yeah not worth finding out, everyone's sick all the time and etc., and my partner likely has long covid so; it does feel invalidating to even see AES states not care about Covid, no clue how Cuba is doing, though they have bigger things to worry about

I've heard the speculation but there's been no evidence of it, nor is there any reason to assume it's the case (except that it would be very convenient! Many denials of reality are normalized because they are more convenient than the truth)

Yea I agree, I saw it being pushed on r/zerocovidcommunity simultaneously with some anti masking psyop about "low cases = lets unmask" lol

That subreddit is a disaster. I swear like every other week there's a post like "is it okay if I call myself CC even if I don't care if I catch Covid?" and a hundred accounts will go "sure that's okay" and then someone will be like "don't mind those assholes who harass people for not being CC enough" and then 20 more accounts will be like "those people are horrible we need to stop gatekeeping in the CC community!" And then I die a little inside.

(Edit:One of the guys) who kept posting about lower wastewater levels a couple months ago seems to lean right and had some suss takes. Everybody loved those posts tho! sus-torment

Edit2: the specific guy I was thinking of has had their account banned. So there's that. Lmao.

Edit3: Double lmao, Google their username.
