oh let me just check The Cutting Room Floor for more inf—

Unfortunately, our server is currently offline due to a sustained DDoS attack that was affecting our host's other customers. It's bad— and we're no strangers to scrapers/AI bots and DDoS traffic.

Are you trans?

That's not really relevant to the site, but yes, I'm genderqueer and lovin' it. Fun fact: Making our logo rotate through various pride flags for Pride Month last year triggered the first major attack on the site and its operators. Unintimidated, We still did it again this year. (Ironically, it was the anti-AI rule that spurred this year's attacks.)

Is it just me or does this seem like a good game history archival opportunity? This video has dire undertones but this doesnt seem like an Apocalypse to me. It seems like a blessing. None of this was being released or used it seems.

Well it's unlikely that sites like hiddenpalace will be able to easily host these leaked builds, right? Like the nintendo gigaleaks it'll probably be subject to takedown notices. It should be an archival blessing tho.

Idk about you but I am already hunting for it. It seems it already was a blessing.

Oh also I saw this quote from an ex Valve dev:

My condolences to anyone who wastes time playing prerelease versions of P2 or L4D2. Listen, every good idea we had went into the final thing we shipped, and anything not in the final version was not a good idea. https://t.co/S4mTllUy3F

which to me really misses the point of why people want to see prototype releases.

Listen, every good idea we had went into the final thing we shipped, and anything not in the final version was not a good idea.

This seems like a really closed-minded point of view. There are all sorts of good ideas in collaborative art that get shot down by a narrow vote edged out by people with poor taste or incorrect views of those ideas. And there's tons of insight into the creative process to be found in having a greater understanding of what ideas were dismissed or reworked

for gamedev i'd believe that stuff that got cut wasn't working or would've taken resources from other stuff to fix. you gotta be really aggro with cuts or shit never gets done

  • Same with a lot of other things. Take literature for example. Lots of works have been edited to hell and back, but looking at drafts manuscripts still enriches the perspective on the finished work.

Some artists never want their drafts or rough work to be seen, and that's OK, too. But idk if the dev who said that is coming at it from that perspective

  • I think it's fair to say that as in "the beta version of the game is not fun to play" and have that be separate from "there is nothing of value in the beta builds".

If someone downloads it, plays it, and expects something more fun than the released game they'll be disappointed. If a dev runs it and looks at the cut mechanics, they may get a good idea, but not a full/polished idea.

Very true, it's probably in service of the 'valve spends all the time in the world painstakingly cooking up the best game' thing as well. I guess ex-Valve dev doesn't give a shit about insight into the creative process...

They suggest it. Even Valve devs responded on X don't think of the cut stuff as what should have been in but maybe a good idea for another game. Like they weren't even mad. There is some very deep lore and archival significance with it. I think that is what the video was implying by titling it "Bigger than you think".

Yeah, it might even be 13.2 TB, never know.

  • I’ve been seeing a lot of talk about this but I finally realized it’s 13 TERABYTES I thought it was 13 GB lmao

Edit: the fact that it’s not just valve betas leaking but also many other games hosted on steam makes this so much more interesting. This really does seem like a good archival opportunity.
