Gray baby syndrome is a rare, life-threatening adverse reaction that occurs in newborns and premature infants due to toxicity from the antibiotic Chloramphenicol.

The baby metabolism can't process a particular antibiotic properly, which (depending on the accrued concentration) causes cell damage in liver, bones and cardiac muscles. As a result, the baby may suffer low blood pressure, kidney or liver failure, jaundice, brain damage and will die, if it's not caught and treated early.
