Used to be quite the edible chef. I think it's technically possible to fully saturate the coconut oil, but I don't think it's functionally possible. I once made edibles that had 1/8th of wax per dose and those definitely hit like 1/8th of wax. And for the record, especially back then, I had the edible tolerance to tell the difference between doses when they're that high. Even now, after a year and a half long break from weed/edibles, I have to take a 200mg edible every night to get sleep, and that doesn't even always work. If I want consistentcy, I have to take about 600mg and at that point I'm not even high, just a little sleepy

My understanding is you probably won't practically saturate something like coconut oil.
I used a sous vide cooker. Id grind the herb and put it in a mason jar and decarb it around 180f for an hour or two, shaking the jar occasionally. Then just add the oil to the jar and set it to 195f, simply because that was the max setting. Id leave it in there for at least 6 hours, but I think that majority of the infusion happens in like the first hour or two.
The main idea here is theres certain temps where cannabinoids start breaking down so the sous vide prevents that. You're not only getting a large portion of the THC but also most of the ones that only occur in trace amounts. Also the mason jar in the water keeps the massive skunk aura contained.
My sweet spot for general consumption was 2 grams of herb to 1 cup of oil. I never went too crazy with the oil since it was easy enough to just eat another brownie or cookie. If I was making a personal batch or some for serious medical use id double that amount, but i genuinely never felt that it was practical to go much stronger. The quality and strain matter a lot too so it's very much a trail and error thing.
I did find that i could substitute the oil directly for peanut butter to make weed peanut butter. A very tasty and convenient way to become way too fucking stoned.
Honestly just extract it with high proof ethanol first. You can completely evarporate the ethanol or keep a little bit for an extract.
If you want to consume it directly you probably want to heat it up so the substances break down a bit first.
edit: don't use denatured alcohol. you want to use something made for human consumption
I do want to make edibles as part of it, do you think it would work to decarb the cannabis, infuse it into everclear, let that evaporate and mix the extraction into the coconut oil?
While the specialists are here: I'm looking to switch away from oil as a medium: I need something a bit thicker, more viscous, and crucially it must be able to be mixed with color and flavor. I'm thinking I'd have better luck with one of the many industrial candy precursors with names like "paraffin sorbitol", but don't know where to start. I basically need a neutral-to-sweet translucent slime with good absorption, any comrade got a lead?

It almost perfectly dissolves in pure ethanol at any ratio.
You do get an pretty overpowering alcohol and cannabis flavor though.
If you add such a tincture to water or even just regular drinking strength spirits you get a cloudy mixture which I imagine is the resin crashing out of the solution.
I think it's quite nice with herbal tea and honey.
Lecithin might make it better dissolve in water, might also improve absorption but I've never bothered.
Okay I'm a chemical engineer and not a chemist so the engineer part is probably influencing this response heavily but I don't think it's that useful of a calculation.
What certainty do you have of the THCA content of your weed? Yield of THC? Composition of the oil? Yield of transfer?

Yeah but like I imagine there are some high pressures and temperatures involved lol.
It's half by weight btw which means you get even better solubility with smaller molecules like alcohols or other small organic molecules. I think the substrate makes a difference in absorption but I'm too high to look it up lol
Yeah at that point you're just designing a semi-continuous process rather than a batch one, since absorption rates depend so much on geometry at the scales these usually happen.
Not really stuff you could do at home, unless you're willing to buy and make some glassware yourself.

I know THC is lipophilic but it is also polar, that's how you make tinctures. Shorter chain fats might work better, but they might not survive the kinds of temperatures extraction would work best at.
Well if you have four grams of distillate and one gram of coconut oil you would just end up with a THC/oil suspension right? I don't think there is a saturation point. You just need enough fat or alcohol to get your metabolism to carry it into your bloodstream. I like to just eat a bowl of something fatty then swallow a little ball of cold oil.
