I want to experiment with making some stupid strong edibles & I can't find proper research on how much THC one can dissolve into oil before it's saturated and a waste of weed

Okay I'm a chemical engineer and not a chemist so the engineer part is probably influencing this response heavily but I don't think it's that useful of a calculation.

What certainty do you have of the THCA content of your weed? Yield of THC? Composition of the oil? Yield of transfer?

Don't worry I'm not just going to run my mouth lol: https://link.springer.com/article/10.1208/s12249-022-02385-8

There is a pay wall but you can get the info from the abstract.

Thank you, that paper is exactly what I'm looking for, I doubt I'll hit 400mg THC / gram of oil lmao

I'm not planning on doing exact math, ballpark numbers are good enough for me & my friends. I was mainly curious what the limit to dissolving THC into oil is & if I was anywhere near it

Am I reading that right? You can dissolve THC into lipids until the resulting liquid is half THC?

Yeah but like I imagine there are some high pressures and temperatures involved lol.

It's half by weight btw which means you get even better solubility with smaller molecules like alcohols or other small organic molecules. I think the substrate makes a difference in absorption but I'm too high to look it up lol

Yeah at that point you're just designing a semi-continuous process rather than a batch one, since absorption rates depend so much on geometry at the scales these usually happen.

Not really stuff you could do at home, unless you're willing to buy and make some glassware yourself.

ChemE by training here, too! And I just had a series of flashbacks to my extraction classes and all the tertiary diagrams.

I know THC is lipophilic but it is also polar, that's how you make tinctures. Shorter chain fats might work better, but they might not survive the kinds of temperatures extraction would work best at.
