Yeah I wouldda thought it was doing fine. It was at most tournaments, people played the game, talked about playing the game. Me personally? Never touched it and none of my friends play it but we would talk like we were gonna someday lol.

I really don’t know what they expected. They wasn’t gonna recreate the success of league in such a saturated market. Just the fact that it was in tournaments and talked about is a major win for fgc. The bad games are very quickly forgotten

they did almost everything wrong you can do a spinoff product:

    the marketing.

    the name.

    the business model.

    the subgenre.

a full price 1v1 focused game with branding that clearly connected it to league and with a fat roster (idk make a lot of characters about the same with different specials unique supers to save money) would've been way more appealing to their audience.

instead they make some tag nightmare when they said they wanted it to be approachable to new players, and did fuckall to reach the sickos who like watching league or to have enough characters that enough people could play their main.

idk how many LoL-heads would really wanna get into a fighting game but they sure didn’t try that hard to convert lol.

Also yeah fighting games as a live service does not work. I think they had he idea that they could slowly add characters but that’s not gonna be easy with a f2p model.

You would think the epic falloff of multiversus could’ve taught them something

no fucking way seriously? I wasn't interested in this game but this whole time I assumed it was doing really well

meanwhile starcraft brood war just started another tournament I guess if there's anything true in competitive games it's that you can't displace the classics

funny you mention brood war because the one problem that 2xko didn't have is competing with previous versions of itself, which is a big problem for ongoing competitive series where the best one is 20+ years old but you still have to shit out some new thing full of mtx and $1000 of downloadable costumes that used to be on the disc.

    Picture of Anne Hathaway

I like Riot's games but I would never ever ever play one. They look very frustrating if you're playing correctly

    Never even heard of it.

    who-did-this

2XKO is available on PC exclusively through the Riot Games client. It is not available on Steam or other third-party storefronts like the Epic Games Store.

in development it had the codename "project L" and other than now they're holding one, at least that name was vaguely connectable to league of legends. shame a bunch of artists and developers lost their jobs instead of the dipshit who came up with the name.

I stand by what I said about it here before. The game shouldn't have had solo play. It should have been forced team play to give it a unique identity, forge friendships and make it more casual-friendly.

That would have just crashed harder because casual gamers dont play fighting games and fighting game players are the ultimate sweatlord and are there for 1v1

I don't think so. If it didn't work out you can add solos in later anyway and get a big player boom from all the people that wanted that.

What they couldn't do is take solos out after they'd already put it in. It was a significant strategic error to launch it like that.

The "but they're sweatlords" argument doesn't sit with me. The biggest complaint people have about the game is that it's made by washed up MvC oldheads who made a sweatfest that only appeals to EVO players.

I wonder if it's even really possible to make a financially successful original fighting game in 2026.

Japan keep publishing anime based fighting games no? I don't know if is financially successful but if not why the hell they keep releasing new ones?

Most of those are just cashgrabs based on the IP, not original. Though I suppose that in fairness 2XKO is also part of a franchise, I just don't really consider league of legends to have the same kind of appeal as say Hunter x Hunter or Jujutsu Kaisen.

You said original . Cause that is fair.

Cause exisiting IPs can do just fine. Thinking of stuff like Streetfighter, Tekken, Mortal Kombat , Smash etc.

I feel like folks show up for those no problem.

But yeah new "large" fighting game is a hard and tough arena.

What?! It looked really cool and fun. I was kinda excited to try it out one of these days =(

It was a two player tag team fighting game. That sounded really cool to me.
