edit with NO WARNING I was banned from the Ukraine community... on my own instance

edit2 a post asking why I was removed and banned was also removed, lol this is pathetic

edit3 after reaching out to @QuentinCallaghan@sopuli.xyz in direct message he immediately chose to accuse me of going off the rails for insight into sopuli.xyz

To be clear, I despise people who are antisemitic, I can't stand it not only is it an evil ideology it reduces complex problems to "blame the jews!" which I think is stupid as hell on top of being hateful as hell. Judge people for their actions not the religions they warp into justification for their actions.

Removed Comment > Don't try to pretend Iran doesn't deserve it. Cool so you know that collective punishment is a war crime right? You do understand you just admitted to supporting that casually without realizing that normal people do not think this way right? You aren't supposed to give the game away that easy lol.... What the actual fuck.... by supersquirrel reason: r3

Removed Comment So would you consider continually assassinating the Iranians we are trying to make a peace deal with while also repeatedly using peace making processes as bad faith covers for massive bombing campaigns meant to humiliate leadership in Iran that chooses foolishly to respond in good faith to the peace negotiation process... something we just had to do because we are stuck in a war? What a laughable argument. What are you on about? The US and Israel started BOTH recent outbreaks of war against Iran, that is what the facts are. by supersquirrel reason: R3

I demand a specific answer, as well as a reason as mods you chose to silence this discussion instead of weigh in on it. This is an issue DIRECTLY relevant to Ukraine and NOTHING of my criticism of Israel and the US has anything to do with being a Nazi or being antisemitic, I am deeply disappointed in this community.

I take this seriously, I do not like being labelled a Nazi and if you are going to throw that around back up your assertions or stop lazily participating in a narrative of silence around these topics.

I've had a few strange interactions with the mods there myself for comments that aren't specifically about Ukraine; I wanted to talk about why governments were supporting Israel while also supporting Ukraine which is kind of, well I don't know a word for it. Stupid doesn't do it justice, but it's close. Anyway, those comments were removed.

As well as being too happy ("Don't be a ghoul") about watching muscovite invaders being blown to tiny pieces by Ukrainian drones. Really I was just sharing the same reactions as the defenders in some videos, which I don't think is ghoulish.

[-] BlameTheAntifa@lemmy.world 4 points 12 hours ago

PTB. The ban and comment removals can not be justified. Only a profoundly evil person would consider any of those comments problematic.

@Burstar@sopuli.xyz is refusing to engage with discussion on the moderation actions on the community. I think they're pretty quick to remove comments & hand out bans. They've removed my posts in the past as duplicates when they were not, but they did restore them when I messaged them to point it out. Burstar, would you please explain the moderation reasoning?

[-] supersquirrel@sopuli.xyz 2 points 13 hours ago

@Burstar@sopuli.xyz so now I have been banned, you have removed my post asking why I was banned and you have removed someone else making a post asking why I was banned.

Explain yourself or I will continue advocating for having you removed as a mod.

!ukraine@sopuli.xyz is in an interesting (bad) place right now, i think. i was accused there of calling for a genocide against russians when i was actually trying to discourage another user, who expressed fascist tendencies elsewhere on the net, from encouraging exactly that while ALSO not suggesting that Ukrainians don't have a right to resistance. another admin around here was also banned for posting an analysis of how russian propaganda mechanisms work to manufacture consent to continue their illegal invasion, with the mod saying that this was sympathy for russia.

i am empathetic to that maintaining a community about Ukraine and centering Ukrainian perspectives is hard, nearing impossible, right now. i would even go so far as to say that the moderation team there is doing a fair to good job, and that those challenges are compounded by the prevalence of people on the threadiverse who take an unnuanced "anything the US does, i take the opposite position." however, in cases like these i think they hit a wrongheaded position, leading me to conclude with a mixture of CLM and PTB.

the world outside our little digital network here is filled with shades and colors that are not conducive to black and white thinking. the Ukrainians i talk to want, first and foremost, to exist in a state of freedom where there is peace and justice. they however feel that given their standing within the world economic order, that means finding safe haven amongst one of the three northern imperiums. for over a century, that meant alignment with russia. following the murder of Georgiy Gongadze, this was no longer viewed as a position that could be sustained. thus began a process finding alignment with another northern power, the US, the EU, and NATO. this arrangement has not been ideal, or even at all times favorable, but it was the path the people i talk to felt gave them the most chance at eventually finding some degree of independence from any of the northern empires.

i think you are QUITE right to assess Ukraine's position in priority alongside israel and Iran. many of the people in the Black Sea Basin and southwest Asia view these as deeply interrelated world events, with the US's support for Ukraine vastly drying up as it shifted its focus to helping israel conduct a higher degree of genocide in Gaza, and evaporating entirely to conduct a war of choice against Iran. that Ukraine's government aligns itself with israel and against Iran is not a universally popular position, and is with the people i talk to seen as an expedient for short term survival that must be adjusted for in the long term.

idk how to wrap up this long rambly comment.

i guess just All Power to All the Motherfuckin' People

[-] Souvenir@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 5 hours ago

that Ukraine’s government aligns itself with israel and against Iran is not a universally popular position, and is with the people i talk to seen as an expedient for short term survival that must be adjusted for in the long term.

The Ukrainian government is engaging in realpolitik. Given the circumstances they find themselves in, ideology, morality and ethics are secondary to survival.

[-] quill7513@anarchist.nexus 1 points 4 hours ago

100%. i could even argue the US has extorted them into that position and that the infamous "could you do us a favor though" call was not the first or last time that a US political entity has used Ukrainian lives to manipulate politics in the US. i cannot, however, bring myself to condemn a people trying to survive, as two northern empires manipulate them, for any specific choice they make as a collective to survive. i see a lot of parallels in the choices they make to the Irish Republicans and to my own experiences coalition building as corporations slowly poison the land me and my neighbors live on. sometimes you make choices you don't like because it gets you through to tomorrow.

i do not anger at Ukraine for taking the allies they take, i anger at the empires of the global north exploiting a people for their own gain.

Free Palestine, Ukraine, Sudan, the Congo, and Latin America

Seems like a Zionist mod, maybe even a Zionist instance if they're citing server rules. Though they seem vague enough that they're probably just using them as a shield.

@QuentinCallaghan@sopuli.xyz What's your input on this as a server admin.

[-] QuentinCallaghan@sopuli.xyz 7 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Regarding the decision, it's quite a stretch to claim @supersquirrel@sopuli.xyz being a Nazi. The idea was criticism towards Israel, and apparently it got misinterpreted as antisemitism.

Looks like I have to explain what's the reasoning behind the rule 3. I didn't want to make a long list of exact kind of behaviors and organizations that are not allowed on Sopuli and clutter the sidebar. Instead I listed several known bad movements so that the users could get a good picture of what kinds of people are not wanted here. Nazis, incels and QAnon, they all share a really warped and hostile view of the world that is black-and-white, and violence has been associated with all of them. And "similar whackos" can be found by looking at what the ADL and CDDH for example list as hate groups.

I don't think I use the word "Nazi" in a too broad sense like on Lemmygrad or Hexbear. In those places a Nazi can be anyone supporting Ukraine or a social democrat for example.

Also it seems like the person there is continuing to remove comments that don't actually violate rule 3 and has banned the OP. It might be worth stepping in since that's not a good look for Sopuli.

I mean at the end of the day is my point is that Ukraine not having any interceptors from allies available to be donated was a situation reached primarily from choices Trump and Netanyahu made, or to broaden the scope a bit, The US Government and Israeli Government made.

To label that Nazi shit is to make two leaps, first that I am doing something here other than pointing out the fact that there is no substantiated evidence that the US and Israel HAD to launch the Iran War when they did, and indeed there is every indication that it was more like a fever dream that had existed for decades until finally the correct set of preconditions came upon Trump and it just... happened...

There is no credible evidence Iran was while under the Iran Nuclear Agreement, pursuing a nuclear weapons program, or more broadly that such a tack towards clandestine military escalation was the correct way to go as a country independent of how much someone hated the US as an Iranian, the strategic conditions clearly pointed towards integrating Iran into the global order more and more and de-emphasizing the "regime" aspect of Iran in favor of engaging more granularly with the Iranian people as a whole.

For Iranians no matter what they felt about the government, it was abundantly clear to them that jumping through silly hoops for the US was worth it if it meant being normalized on the global stage as a nation.

So to then turn around and say all of that is irrelevant and makes me a Nazi or insane conspiracy theorist to bring up when you pan the camera to Ukraine which VERY MUCH WAS NOT GIVEN A CHOICE in starting the Ukraine War proper in 2022 (or wherever you want to draw the line). Russia has been rolling tanks into Ukraine on an industrial scale for years now, and Ukrainians more than anything would have loved it to be long over by now so they wouldn't need the interceptors/Patriots in the first place.

To summarize, it is dangerous to be overly reductive here, it leads to people misidentifying someone who absolutely despises antisemitism and who finds every person they have ever met who harbored antisemitism disgusting and weird... as an antisemite themselves....

Unnecessary war endangers jews just the same as it endangers muslims, christians, hindus, atheists and people living within and without Israel who simply want to live a peaceful life..

[-] Hell_nah_brother 2 points 1 day ago

Ukraine and Israel are de facto allies, more evidently in the last days when Ukraine hit Iranian ships . If you criticise one, you bother both especially in that comm. If you think Israel is not defending itself, you might think also Ukraine is not totally just defending itself and this idea might be unwelcome.

What nonsense is that website? How is this even a "fact" in the traditional sense either way?

edit specifically see this article I posted a week ago for why your source is so potentially problematic and biased.

The key intended audience of these sites is not concerned Americans, it’s not even humans—most of the sites average a few hundred unique visitors each month. Instead, Parscale and his firm, Clock Tower X, created them as part of a $46.5 million contract with the Israeli government to try and influence artificial intelligence-powered chatbots, tools like Claude or ChatGPT.

Parscale has made his goal of influencing artificial intelligence—often referred to as “LLM poisoning”—explicit. In his initial agreement with Israel, Parscale said that he would deploy “websites and content to deliver GPT framing results on GPT conversations” as part of the contract. More recently, his team even told Axios they are “seeing success” at getting popular AI systems to incorporate information from their sites, though they declined to provide data.

Yes but there are also the sources, you can read them, from the Kiev post to Jerusalem post to AP. I didn’t say it’s a fact, I said “de facto” meaning it’s not officially like this but in practice yes.

[-] mrdown@lemmy.world 1 points 13 hours ago

It is really the opposite. Both pretend to be ally but in reality Israel voted against calling the russian invassion an agression, have history of collaborsting with russia and have zero sanctions on russia

[-] Hell_nah_brother -1 points 5 hours ago

To me israel is devoted only to itself, it would do whatever insane stuff just to get a little upper hand on a situation, whatever that might be. Till the Samson option.

I also think in 2021 Israel needed Ukraine to start full scale war with Russia just to keep the news cycle busy (and money flowing) while doing genocide next door.

[-] supersquirrel@sopuli.xyz 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

All the more reason to make your reasoning specific then.

"in practice" in what way?

[-] Hell_nah_brother -2 points 1 day ago

Like Ukraine shooting down Iranian ships. Did you read the sources?

[-] supersquirrel@sopuli.xyz 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

How does Ukraine 'shooting down' an Iranian ship make Israel an ally of Ukraine? It could reductively be argued it makes Ukraine an ally of Israel, but not the other way around.

[-] Hell_nah_brother 0 points 1 day ago

Ahah what is this kindergarten? “No! He is MY bbf!”. Do you think Zelensky helped Bibi because he likes him? 😳 omg babe

Allies are allies because they have a common enemy, they do, that’s it.

[-] ChairmanMeow@programming.dev -1 points 13 hours ago

Having a common enemy doesn't make them allies. Iran supplied Russia with drones that Russia uses to bomb Ukraine. That seems reason enough for Ukraine to target Iran, Israel doesn't need to be allied with Ukraine for that to be the case.

[-] Hell_nah_brother 0 points 5 hours ago

This is from may ‘25, the times of israel .

According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Kyiv has offered its expertise, arguing that his country’s fight against Russia and Israel’s fight against Iran and its proxies are linked, due to the tight military and political ties between Moscow and Tehran [source

Or Wikipedia:

On 5 April, President Zelenskyy asserted that he wanted Ukraine to become a "big Israel with its own face", with members of the armed forces present "in all institutions" of the country, abandoning hopes of becoming "absolutely liberal."

Love this part. Israel wants, and has, its hands everywhere and Zelensky is a good doggy. Sorry not convinced.

[-] ChairmanMeow@programming.dev 1 points 4 hours ago

The second quote is about becoming like Israel, which in a way makes sense for a country under attack by Russia. And the first quote literally describes the link between Russia and Iran that I also did. Plus, Ukraine is deeply dependent on Germany and the US for military assistance, so publicly suggesting you can share expertise with Israel plays well with them. But there's not a whole lot Israel wants out of Ukraine, it already has a powerful military capable of repelling Iranian attacks.

[-] mrdown@lemmy.world 1 points 9 hours ago

Can iraqis attack ukraine for ukraine participating in the occupation of Iraq?

[-] ChairmanMeow@programming.dev 1 points 4 hours ago

If Ukraine is doing that it seems legitimate that Iraq could strike back.

[-] mrdown@lemmy.world 1 points 4 hours ago
[-] supersquirrel@sopuli.xyz 0 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

That is not how allies work babe

[-] Hell_nah_brother -3 points 22 hours ago

My friend, I’m not here to convince you of nothing. You think they are not allies? Great man, have a nice day 🤷‍♂️

[-] mrdown@lemmy.world 25 points 2 days ago

PTB. Fuck anybody who support the illegal war on iran and still defend israel. The same israel that was involved in this war that reduced the number defense system that ukraine need to defend themselves , the same israel who has good relation with russia, the same israel who voted against un resolution condemning russian agression on ukraine, rhe same isrsel who has no sanctions on russia

[-] southsamurai@sh.itjust.works 8 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Trying to wrap my head around how that rule was chosen. I can't see any way to twist it around to fit.

I could see arguments about it being off topic for the community, I could see it maybe fitting rule 1 if you stretched that one far enough, at least the first comment you quoted here. But it would be a stretch because while the tone is aggro, it's still phrased well enough to go after ideas more than people, so I'm struggling to see that.

Which leaves me at PTB. I can't see any justification for the rule they used at all, nor any other rule applying enough to think they maybe just hit the wrong key and it was supposed to be a different rule number. That's the only possible way I could see it being anything other than PTB, and it would still point to some poor quality moderation

Edit: dug a little deeper, and I am fully PTB on this, no doubts or maybes. It's a blatant suppression of a stance the mod disagrees with, but isn't in the rules in any way good sense can connect. The comments OP was responding to in the quoted segments in this post were most definitely aligned with a specific stance, and OP's responses matched the tone of them well within reasonable limits. That means that only removing one side of the discussion shows a bias that can't be supported by established rules.

Which, in terms of PTB, having shitty rules still doesn't make it okay to ignore them, that's why we can block communities and urge change via admins. But they didn't even bother to include their particular beliefs as a rule so that everyone knows going in what the line is. That means it's personal and not applied evenly.

Sorry you got hit by the PTB hammer there squirrel, sopuli is usually the least PTB prone instance I've run across, so it's on the shocking side for me. Shocking enough that if I were on that instance, I'd be messaging admins about it because I know that's not how they roll

[-] LordFireCrotch@lemmy.today 17 points 2 days ago

You didn't get the memo?

The term Nazi has been so diluted that it can mean anything the mods want it to mean.

[-] supersquirrel@sopuli.xyz 12 points 2 days ago

Oh I did, it just makes me so sad how prevalent the kneejerk reflex is... and how much it gets exploited by awful people to silence criticism.

qanon is delusional, thinking normal people don't support war crimes is also delusional.
