Engels, Frederick, socialist, born in Barmen on Nov. 28, 1820, the son of a well-to-do manufacturer. Took up commerce, but already at an early age began propagating radical and socialist ideas in newspaper articles and speeches. After working for some time as a clerk in Bremen and serving for one year as an army volunteer in Berlin in 1842, he went for two years to Manchester, where his father was co-owner of a cotton mill.

In 1844 he worked for the Deutsch-Französische Jahrbücher published by Arnold Ruge and Karl Marx in Paris. In 1844 he returned to Barmen and in 1845 addressed communist meetings organised by Moses Hess and Gustav K?ttgen in Elberfeld. Then, until 1848, he lived alternately in Brussels and Paris; in 1846 he joined, with Marx, the secret Communist League, a predecessor of the International, and represented the Paris communities at the two League congresses in London in 1847. On the League's instructions, he wrote, jointly with Marx, the Communist Manifesto addressed to the "working men of all countries", which was published shortly before the February revolution [1848] (a new edition appeared in Leipzig in 1872).

In 1848 and 1849 E. worked in Cologne for the Neue Rheinische Zeitung edited by Marx, and after its suppression he contributed, in 1850, to the Politisch-oekonomische Revue. He witnessed the uprisings in Elberfeld, the Palatinate and Baden and took part in the Baden-Palatinate campaign as aide-de-camp in Willich's volunteer corps. After the suppression of the Baden uprising E. returned as a refugee to England and re-entered his father's firm in Manchester in 1850.

He retired from business in 1869 and has lived in London since 1870. He assisted his friend Marx in providing support for the international labour movement, which arose in 1864, and in carrying on social-democratic propaganda. E. was Secretary for Italy, Spain and Portugal on the General Council of the International. He advocates Marxian communism in opposition to both "petty bourgeois" Proudhonist and nihilistic Bakuninist anarchism. His main work is The Condition of the Working-Class in England (Leipzig, 1845; new edition, Stuttgart, 1892), which, although one-sided, possesses undeniable scientific value. His Anti-Dühring is a polemic of considerable size (2nd ed. Zurich, 1886). E.'s other published works include Ludwig Feuerbach and the End of Classical German Philosophy (Stuttgart, 1888), The Origin of the Family Socialism: Utopian and Scientific (4th ed., Berlin, 1891). E. also published Vols 2 and 3 of Karl Marx's Capital and the 3rd and 4th editions of Vol. I, and contributed many articles to the Neue Zeit.

discovering that Boards of Canada is great. I had some misconception that they were indie rock I'd probably not care about, and ignored the youtube recs until my recent ambient binge where a BoC mix came up

I've been in school too long. I have good things to think about but no time to think about them.

I thought I had to do an annoying errand today. But it turns out everything is copacetic. I can stay here in my warm hermitage free from disturbance yet again.

I've been testing out Lemmy clients for Android, I tried Eternity (clone of Reddit client Infinity) and Jerboa, Jerboa works decently at displaying emotes but neither has an emote picker built in so I can't use our beautiful hexbear emotes 😢 lmk if you have tried other clients and how well they work

Something that rustles my jimmies is when people on the left are called "elitist" for their views. Not only is it BS because I am calling for a less hierarchical society, especially when I'm accused of elitism for thinking that the Holocaust was both real and wrong. But it's like, look who's talking?

grillman: "Hey! Gammon is an elitist slur against the working class! Why is it a slur? Because...uhhh, racism is for poor people you fucking elitist!"

Caressing, bent up to the jug again

With sheaths and pills invading all those stills

In a hovel of a bed, I will scream in vain

Oh please, Tim Kaine, leave me with some pain

Just watched Bound and it's kind of interesting to see some elements of the Matrix in it. The ex-con shares a lot of physical and personality characteristics with Trinity and there are moments when the cinematography reminds me of the Matrix.

It's also a lesbian movie but it's done tastefully without getting into fetish territory.

Love busting my ass, dick and balls frantically trying to get all the food out before we open, nervous as fuck because I haven't prepared these menu items before and have no idea the timing, or even the quantities of ingredients necessary (the recipes given will be like "6 gallons of stock. 2 gallons of milk" yeah I needed like 2 gallons and half a gallon for the same quantity of other ingredients, thanks recipe)

oh plus finding out when it's time to cook that all the ground beef is frozen and having a little panic about whether to cook it from frozen or something else out

Only for these fuckin college kids to plow through ALL the chicken pot pie and only eat like one fucking hotel pan (i made seven) of the beef pot pie. I coulda just not made it and saved my ass like 40 minutes cooking and plating it + 20 minutes of having to clean out the fuckin tilt stirrer I used to cook it

Seriously fuck cleaning that thing. It's so fucking badly designed. The steam jacketed kettles are so much easier to clean because I can just run water through them. This stupid piece of shit is like a big skillet with a hydraulic handle that tilts it to pour stuff out of it

But like, it is a huge pain in the ass to get detritus out because you have to put water in and dump it out multiple times because it doesn't all flow out. If it just had a fucking drain built into it so that I could wash shit out without tilting it itt would be so much easier

Also it's set into what's basically a giant sink on the floor, right? Immediately under it is just a big stainless steel basin with a drain that goes to some sort of fat separation system, so apparently we can just shove food waste down it and It's Fine (probably)

But the fucking thing is set up too close to the edge, so if you tilt to pour, it'll go all over the fucking floor instead. So you have to use a big sheet pan to hold in front deflect it into the basin

It's ass. I hate it. Fuck that thing.

At least I only had to clean it once today, I thought i'd have to cook the chicken pot pie in it too but I managed to make barely enough of it in one of the large rondeau pans (which the dishwashers clean and not me, thank you <3)
