Rumours have it that there’s a new Apple TV 4K coming in the first half of next year. Would it be worth waiting for it or buying now?

I would see it more on the content side of things. Is there anything you like to access now that the Apple TV offers? Then yeah it’s worth it. Also check if your TV has Apple TV already.

I’m still using the 1st generation apple tv 4k( 2017 ) and i have nothing to complain

[–] [email protected] 1 points 9 months ago (3 children)

Do you use the YouTube app? I just upgraded to the latest 4K gen from the first generation 4K and it’s so much better. That app was getting unusable because it was so slow and non responsive.

The question would be, what else can they add?

Purely speculation on my part, but there’s three things I could see reasonably get added in a new version:

• Better processor (which will only matter for gaming, really)

• Built in Microphone for Siri smart home controls

• Tools for Vision Pro compatibility (such as the pop-up view like what it will do with the Mac)

• An entirely new, smaller/cheaper version built just for streaming

Do any of these features, or any others you imagine, make it worth waiting? And of course, none of these are guaranteed, though the first is probable, and there are rumors of the last one.

It’s a tough decision, but if you’re only going to use it for streaming, I’m not sure it’s worth waiting unless you’re sure the cheap one will come out.

Honestly a better processor is what’s making me think about waiting; hence my question

Meh, if you have no ATV, just look for a deal on the current ATV

[–] [email protected] 1 points 9 months ago

Shoppers Drug Mart in Canada has the 32GB ATV 2021 on for $99.99CAD. But there is a special points redemption on for Black Friday whereby you cash in 70K points to get $100 off. Just have to add a cheap item to get the amount before tax above the $100 threshold. That's what I did this morning. After taxes, I paid less than $21CAD for my box...

You know they could keep the Same processor and keep new processor for the expensive Pro model.. I am also on the fence for 128gb. Holding as of now as I missed the $99 offer at Costco

[–] [email protected] 1 points 9 months ago (1 children)

The $99 Costco deal ends on the 27th. (So tomorrow) go get one.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 9 months ago

Costco had the 128GB version for $99 in September.

Software limitation, not hardware.

The new processor might have AV1 hardware coding support which could be a benefit if you're playing high bitrate 4k+ files encoded with AV1.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 9 months ago

The av1 decoder from the iphone 15 pro soc. That would be useful for future proofing. That being said the a15 should still be able to soft decode av1 probably, as it is plenty powerful.

Definitely feels like most technology is hitting a plateau. High interest rates throttling investment in R&D and potentially hitting an asymptote on what physics will allow… new phones / new TVs / etc seem only slightly better than years prior…

There are always rumors of new ones. Sometimes they're true, sometimes they're not.

If you need it, get it.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 9 months ago

If you need one now buy it. You can always sell it later if the new one has a musthave feature

[–] [email protected] 1 points 9 months ago

Do you need an Apple TV now or when a new one is announced? That’s the question. I’d just buy now and use the new one in another room if you find value in the next model.

If you plan to game on it I’d wait or buy now and sell when the new one comes out. If you just stream then buy now.

I have the latest ATV and my son and I play Lego Brawls together. When we play for about 30-40 minutes straight it starts to overheat and has lag spikes. Not terrible but enough that if you play games I’d keep getting the latest and greatest. They are only like $100 on sale and you can move old ones to different tvs.

Fake news. If you want it just buy it, there will always be a new one coming

[–] [email protected] 1 points 9 months ago (1 children)

I have the newest one out atm. Absolutely nothing to complain about with it. It’s great

[–] [email protected] 1 points 9 months ago (1 children)

This. When I first got it I was like..nice..but whatever. 1 year later, I love it. My wishlist is petty. Maybe backlit. A couple user defined preprogrammed buttons..maybe. I love it, especially after the last O/S update

There will always be a new one. If you want to stay on the latest just sell your current one when the new one is released you'll get a good chunk of it back.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 9 months ago

Just get the new one. You won’t be disappointed.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 9 months ago

Always consult MacRumors Buyer's Guides

Currently "Neutral; Mid Product Cycle"

The third-generation Apple TV 4K was introduced in October 2022 and is equipped with an A15 Bionic chip for improved performance and HDR10+ support for the best possible video quality, while the Siri Remote now charges via USB-C. A 64GB model is priced at $129, while a 128GB model at $149 adds Ethernet and Thread smart home networking.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 9 months ago

As others have said: if you need one now get one now.

It’s mid product cycle, probably

https://buyersguide.macrumors.com/#Apple_TV

“Neutral” to buy now.

But say you get one now, about $130 for the wireless only model:

$130 / 12 is about eleven bucks a month if you keep it for a year—at which point you could sell it, maybe $50?

Not that much compared to monthly subscriptions for Netflix, Disney, Hulu, HBO which has the dumb name Max now, etc

It’s a pleasure to use, and stein, compared to the cost of subscriptions it’s worth it I think.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 9 months ago

I’ve had the 1st, 2nd, and third gen ATV 4k and if you put it side by side I wouldn’t be able to tell the difference besides the remote.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 9 months ago

buy a used one for now and see if you like it enough to pay full price for the new one when it comes out.

I'm seeing plenty of current gen for under $50 on marketplace.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 9 months ago

Apple TV box is a product that is out of ideas. Essentially every new AppleTV box comes with useless upgraded processor and (never fulfilled) promises of how this processor is going to lead to new things. That’s it. Once in blue moon Apple refreshes remote control, usually to the worse.

Anyone having problems with the continue watching in the TV app.

Lately I've been watching Discovery content in max and all of a sudden the TV app says they're not on max, but only in Discovery Plus.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 9 months ago (1 children)

I don’t think that has anything to do with the Apple TV. That sounds like it’s discovery making that change of pulling content.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 9 months ago (1 children)

It has to do with the TV app.

For example I love watching Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. Max says there's 45 seasons and the TV app only says there's only 7 seasons.

Now I put the current episode I'm watching in up next. Then I click on it and brings me to the open in section and and I click on open in and it doesn't give the option for max even though I've been watching it on max.

It was working correctly until a few days ago.

I would wait

[–] [email protected] 1 points 9 months ago

What features would you be waiting for?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 9 months ago

I was having the conversation with some other dad's at a party yesterday on the 4K. The jump in price that undertook is the thing that harms the product.

Different rumours are going around but this needs to have a drop in price and if they offered a 2k only version as well that was even cheaper... The latter would sell more.
The old $99 Apple TV was appealing.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 9 months ago

Rumour has it that the new ones will have a faster processor and larger storage due to them leaning heavily into gaming in the near future. Essentially making the Apple TV a gaming console as well as a streaming box

[–] [email protected] 1 points 9 months ago (1 children)

The only benefit at this point because they really have hit a wall with the Apple TV (unless you want 8k) is to make an Apple TV with a disc drive. I know seems backwards but there are still a lot of people that enjoy physical copies. I myself have gone more digital.

There are no legit rumors about a new model. The current model is better than ANY streamer on the market. Buy one and you’ll never regret it. Wait for rumors and you’ll be waiting forever.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 9 months ago

Just buy it. Can’t see how much better the new one will be. Maybe faster processor for gaming. But who cares. If you want to upgrade later, just sell your old one.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 9 months ago

The new one is coming out first half of next year and will be cheaper

[–] [email protected] 1 points 9 months ago
[–] [email protected] 1 points 9 months ago

The new one will be a modest boost to the a16 chip, and might have WiFi 6e, but that’s it. It will have the Dolby atmos, Dolby vision and hdr 10 that the older, cheaper Apple TV will have.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 9 months ago

Maybe they can the volume on it cause it's so low smh

[–] [email protected] 1 points 9 months ago

I went and bought one today to use with my BenQ X3000i projector. It does HDR10, Atmos (though yes not the better lossless version) all at 4k60 which is what my projector supports anyway. It already beats using my Xbox Series X as my media streaming device and I was quite surprised at how well AirPlay screen mirroring from my MacBook works.

I kinda want a bigger storage option, my kids love playing Apple Arcade games but they are limited with how many they can put on it.
