[purple, happy]
You know how sometimes you don't want to keep consuming media after finding out who wrote it?

[blue, a finger raised]
Sure, people would say you're having a hard time separating the art from the artist

[purple, distraught]
Well the other day I was reading this book called "Mein Kampf" which was alright, then I looked up the author's bio on Wikipedia and… damn

[blue, blasé]

A buddy of mine and me played this game while drunk, where we'd randomly choose a page from the book and then a random passage from said page. Pretty much every single time it was the most insane bullshit aver put on paper. It was hilarious.

There's nothing wrong with reading mein kampf until you start considering it art.

[-] Alpha71@lemmy.world 4 points 17 hours ago

I can separate the art from the artist. for example I like the monster hunter series by Larry Corriea, and the Kildar series by John Ringo. Both are massive right wing dumbasses. So I consume their content, I just make sure to never pay for it so they never get a dime from me.

On a side note, if you want a good laugh, you really should read Ringo's 2008 novel "The Last Centurion."

It's his take on a global environmental catastrophe and how a poorly substituted Hillary Clinton clone bungles the whole thing.

The best part is he's come damn close to predicting how the Trump administration works right now. It's fuckin' hilarious!

I was in a used book store and they had a copy of Mein Kampf that had been printed in Nazi Germany, wrapped in a plastic protective bag with a tag that read "Do Not Open - Ask For Help."

It was probably to keep people from getting their greasy fingerprints on an old book, but I like to think the admonishment had a double meaning.

I'd be curious how they got the book in the first place because if I owned a used book store I'm not touching that without a very good reason. You can't in good conscience sell it, because any private collector who wants it is 99.99999% of the time a terrible person and should be kicked out of the store; it's probably not something a museum is interested in even as a donation; and destroying it feels a bit too... I don't know, it wouldn't be wrong to destroy it but the irony is too thick for me.

[-] lime@feddit.nu 46 points 2 days ago

it's a shit book even on its own merits so if purple liked it they likely got some biases confirmed by it 😬

[-] Gullible@sh.itjust.works 15 points 2 days ago

You don’t understand, the translation doesn’t properly convey some of the climactic conclusions. You have to read it in the original Aramaic to really understand it

[-] BillyClark@piefed.social 12 points 2 days ago

I've never read it, but my understanding is that I'm in good (and bad) company, because almost nobody has read it. Even in Nazi Germany, people only bought it because they were expected to own a copy, and they didn't read it. Supposedly, it's not well organized and hard to read, in general, even in its original language. People bought a copy and kept it in their homes to show loyalty, similar to how they'd have a portrait of Hitler.

[-] Holytimes@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 day ago

I've attempted to read it. It's not good. Like not even just talking about the subject matter. It really is just poorly laid out in poorly written. I only managed to make it about a quarter of the way through before I had to set it down because it was just giving me a headache.

[-] Zwiebel@feddit.org 14 points 1 day ago

Modern AFD voters don't read their parties program either so there's that

[-] aeronmelon@lemmy.world 12 points 2 days ago

Turns out he was failed writer in addition to being a failed artist.

[-] Gullible@sh.itjust.works 10 points 2 days ago

Huh, my pattern recognition is hitting me with Crowder, Shapiro, and Yiannopoulos. Wonder what that means.

[-] Stefan_S_from_H@piefed.zip 3 points 1 day ago

AFAIK, he dictated it.

[-] tazeycrazy@feddit.uk 16 points 1 day ago

You don't need Wikipedia to know that mein Kampf is from a nazi. You could separate Hitler from most of his early art but not his political art. It's literally called "MY" struggle. He is going to mention himself a few times.

[-] Dyskolos@lemmy.zip 5 points 1 day ago

It's actually more "my battle" than "my struggle". Not that this matters much. But the latter sounds more like Adolf's personal struggles with his job, wife, life and all 😁

[-] Enkrod@feddit.org 1 points 8 hours ago

Mhm... imho it's somewhere between, I don't do battle with the six year old on the way to the pediatrician, but it absolutely was a Kampf.

Struggle is too tame but battle doesn't have quite the same additional less violent connotations as Kampf.

Since with the H-man battle is heavily connoted with the war, struggle might be the better translation to convey the exact meaning.

[-] Dyskolos@lemmy.zip 1 points 8 hours ago

My conflict? Also too tame. My fight?

But his Kampf was more of a battle than a struggle to get a kid to the doc, I'd argue.

[-] OwOarchist@pawb.social 5 points 1 day ago

You don’t need Wikipedia to know that mein Kampf is from a nazi.

And 99.999% of people who find that book specifically sought it out because they already know who the author was.

[-] lugal@sopuli.xyz 2 points 1 day ago

He is going to mention himself a few times.

The whole beginning is autobiographical. It's more than just a few times

[-] sunsofold@lemmy.zip 10 points 1 day ago

'Mein Kampf' isn't art. It's non-fiction, at least insofar as the writer believed it to be describing the real world. 'Separate the art from the artist' doesn't apply to non-fiction.

[-] OwOarchist@pawb.social 13 points 1 day ago

isn’t art. It’s non-fiction

Bruh. Not to defend that particular book, but non-fiction absolutely can be art.

Would you say a painting isn't art if the painter painted a picture of something that actually exists, making it a non-fiction painting? Just because you're describing the real world doesn't mean it's not art.

[-] sunsofold@lemmy.zip 2 points 18 hours ago

I draw the distinction between art and craft. One can be a craftsman, very skilled in the techniques of a process, without being an artist, a creator of expressive works. A woodworking craftsman can make perfectly dimensioned copies of a table, using great skill, and they might be beautiful, but unless they design the table they haven't necessarily done anything artistic. In writing non-fiction, one can have great craft (making eloquent, precise, and concise word choices, making phrases that are memorable or entertaining without compromising verity, etc.) but being creative is the departure point from non-fiction. If you create facts and put them into your non-fiction, you, at best, are mistaken, but are likely simply falsifying evidence or lying.

[-] OwOarchist@pawb.social 1 points 13 hours ago

Who said art is 'creating facts'?

Take a personal memoir, for example. You don't think that can be art?

[-] sunsofold@lemmy.zip 1 points 11 hours ago

No one said art is creating facts. Perhaps I was not clear.

A memoir can be written with great skill, craft, eloquence, sensitivity and/or care, but it cannot be an act of creation and a non-fiction work at the same time. If you write a memoir and are creating events, making them up, you are not writing non-fiction. If you write a memoir in which you have not created anything, simply reported the events, it is non-fiction, but not a creative work. It is productive, produces an artifact, not creative, creating something new.

[-] Holytimes@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 day ago

A painting of a real person is still to a degree fiction. It's a facsimile of a real person. The subject is just as important as the skill when it comes to the actual worth of the piece. You can appreciate it for the technique and the skill being put on display while separating that from the artist itself.

Books on the other hand are a big harder to do in such a manner. You can appreciate a written work for its technical execution. But intrinsically a written work written as a non-fiction is going to be more linked to the actual invoked thought of the piece in the meaning of the piece than it is the actual technical execution of it.

So there's less to separate from the artist.

Or more bluntly put, if a fascist draws a picture, that picture doesn't inherently have to be fascist. But if a fascist writes a book about fascism from their own perspective and opinion that book's fascist.

[-] jnod4@lemmy.ca 2 points 19 hours ago

Are documentaries art? An aircraft service manual surely can't be, what about a medical school book?

[-] one_old_coder@piefed.social 9 points 1 day ago

Mein kampf sucks. I don't understand this comic.

[-] lastlybutfirstly@lemmy.world 0 points 16 hours ago

I think the joke is that the guy is unwittingly outing himself as a Nazi. He thought it was great until he learned the author's reputation.

[-] one_old_coder@piefed.social 1 points 12 hours ago

I know, but the book has a reputation to suck big time, and the character says it was alright which makes it confusing. Also everyone knows who wrote it.

[-] lastlybutfirstly@lemmy.world 2 points 5 hours ago

It’s a straightman-funnyman routine, where the funny man is often portrayed as extraordinarily dumb for comedic effect while the straight man acts as the audience surrogate reacting in the way we would react, also for comedic effect.

[-] thatsTheCatch@lemmy.nz 10 points 1 day ago

I think it's meant to be criticising people who just say "separate the art from the artist" for things like Harry Potter, but them pointing out the hypocrisy with a book that no one can defend because of who wrote it. That's my take, anyway

[-] Bleys@lemmy.world 2 points 16 hours ago

Yeah but the point of the saying “separate the art of the artist” is that it’s difficult to reconcile a piece of media you would otherwise like with the fact the artist is a POS.

Basically everyone agrees Mein Kampf sucks, even Nazis only like it performatively. So there’s no reconciliation necessary if you don’t like the media anyway. OP’s comic feels like a miss, the obvious strawman doesn’t even says he likes it just that it’s alright so it barely even fits the saying anyway.

[-] tazeycrazy@feddit.uk 4 points 1 day ago

Yea mein kampf doesn't need a evil writer to be evil. It would be evil if it was anonymous or ghost written. Other art by Hitler would have been a better argument as it is just a picture of a city or building and doesn't have any racist or antisemitic content but still is stained by him in its story.

[-] saltnotsugar@lemmy.world 11 points 2 days ago

Ever wish your racist uncle’s thanksgiving rant was put into book form? Now there’s Mein Kampf! No coherent thoughts, just pure ranting!

[-] Skullgrid@lemmy.world 11 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

It's quite a struggle

One of the most mind fucking books ever written.

The forward explains that Adolph Hitler came to the USA in 1921 and became a science fiction illustrator. Eventually, he shifted to writing and this book is his master piece.

Speaking of which, I was listening to this band called Lost Prophets the other day. I think their music is really good! Have you guys ever heard of them?

You shouldn't and cannot separate the art from the artist. That's not how art works.

[-] Donkter@lemmy.world 1 points 13 hours ago

You can. I think what you're referring to is that you can get a deeper meaning of the art by learning about the artist, but you can still separate the art.

This comic is a perfect example. You can separate Mein Kampf from the artist, and guess what? It's still a terrible piece of art. Bingo bango, all it took was media literacy.

If you couldn't separate the art from the artist to dismiss art then you would be saying that if someone has evil beliefs their soul is evil and they are not capable of creating good art. Which is a heinous belief. Bad people can make good art.

[-] Tattorack@lemmy.world 1 points 7 hours ago* (last edited 7 hours ago)

I said nothing about skill. Neither does this comic.

[-] Donkter@lemmy.world 1 points 6 hours ago

And neither did I. A bad person can still make something soulful and meaningful.

[-] Beeen132@feddit.org 8 points 1 day ago

Sometimes you can and sometimes you can't. That's how it works ;)

[-] Tattorack@lemmy.world -4 points 1 day ago

Then you don't understand art.

[-] luminish@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

You can however like and dislike different things an artist and an art does. Its just siloing the stuff you dislike away as if the context never matters is simply wilful ignorance.

[-] Dyskolos@lemmy.zip -1 points 1 day ago

Why? I totally don't care who made it, when I like what is made.

So, teach me the ways of the art and how it works, please.

[-] Tattorack@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

An artist is not a machine who just prints stuff. When an artist makes something, regardless of what it is they're making, their feelings, experiences, teachings, worldview, and personal beliefs/opinions shape the art they make.

If you take those things away you have an AI generator. No music, writing, poetry, rapping, drawing, painting, or even corporate logo design can exist without the events, influences, and decisions of the one making these things.

[-] Dyskolos@lemmy.zip 0 points 16 hours ago

An artist is not a machine who just prints stuff

No. But I didn't question that. I just don't care if this music I like was made by AI, Adolf Hitler or Or two gay penguins. I value art for what it is to me, not what someone wants it to be. I don't look behind the curtain.

If you take those things away you have an AI generator

Nah. I am the living proof. I consume the front, pay for it (mostly) and everyone is happy. And behold! The artist is still there, even without me caring. Might he do whatever he does to create the stuff I like.

[-] Tattorack@lemmy.world 1 points 7 hours ago

An artist who is a terrible person draws from those elements that make him a terrible person to make art. If you're selectively choosing to ignore where that comes from then you yourself are a terrible person.

However, you have already more or less admitted that by saying you do nothing but consume.

[-] Dyskolos@lemmy.zip 1 points 2 hours ago* (last edited 2 hours ago)

So, you, a very smart person, would only admire art, for which you exactly, and personally, know the artists intentions, moral compass and general ethics? That does not only sound pretentious but also hypocritical and deeply impractical.

As if you'd know every artists fucking life-story. And, by your logic, you mustn't consume otherwise. Missing knowledge doesn't protect.

And yes, I only consume. What else do you do with a e.g. painting? Rub one out in front of it? Pray to the art-god? Write letters of admiration to the artist, scented with your perfume? I just hang it on the wall and admire it for what it is. Art.

Also...a bit simplistic to just assume a "terrible person" draws exclusively from terrible sources to create art. As if people are black or white. And also, who on this earth is not a terrible person in the end? How clean and "good" are you hm? Do you spend every minute to help those less fortunate than you? Do you not profit from childlabour and slavery when purchasing goods that aren't made by your neighbor while you were watching? Thought so.

Rules
  1. 😇 Be Nice!

    • Treat others with respect and dignity. Friendly banter is okay, as long as it is mutual; keyword: friendly.
  2. 🏘️ Community Standards

    • Comics should be a full story, from start to finish, in one post.
    • Posts should be safe and enjoyable by the majority of community members, both here on lemmy.world and other instances.
    • Any comic that would qualify as raunchy, lewd, or otherwise draw unwanted attention by nosy coworkers, spouses, or family members should be tagged as NSFW.
    • Moderators have final say on what and what does not qualify as appropriate. Use common sense, and if need be, err on the side of caution.
  3. 🧬 Keep it Real

    • Comics should be made and posted by real human beans, not by automated means like bots or AI. This is not the community for that sort of thing.
  4. 📽️ Credit Where Credit is Due

    • Comics should include the original attribution to the artist(s) involved, and be unmodified. Bonus points if you include a link back to their website. When in doubt, use a reverse image search to try to find the original version. Repeat offenders will have their posts removed, be temporarily banned from posting, or if all else fails, be permanently banned from posting.
    • Attributions include, but are not limited to, watermarks, links, or other text or imagery that artists add to their comics to use for identification purposes. If you find a comic without any such markings, it would be a good idea to see if you can find an original version. If one cannot be found, say so and ask the community for help!
  5. 📋 Post Formatting

    • Post an image, gallery, or link to a specific comic hosted on another site; e.g., the author's website.
    • Meta posts about the community should be tagged with [Meta] either at the beginning or the end of the post title.
    • When linking to a comic hosted on another site, ensure the link is to the comic itself and not just to the website; e.g.,
      ✅ Correct: https://xkcd.com/386/
      ❌ Incorrect: https://xkcd.com/
  6. 📬 Post Frequency/SPAM

    • Each user (regardless of instance) may post up to five (5 🖐) comics a day. This can be any combination of personal comics you have written yourself, or other author's comics. Any comics exceeding five (5 🖐) will be removed.
  7. 🏴‍☠️ Internationalization (i18n)

    • Non-English posts are welcome. Please tag the post title with the original language, and include an English translation in the body of the post; e.g.,
      Sí, por favor [Spanish/Español]
  8. 🍿 Moderation

    • We are human, just like most everybody else on Lemmy. If you feel a moderation decision was made in error, you are welcome to reach out to anybody on the moderation team for clarification. Keep in mind that moderation decisions may be final.
    • When reporting posts and/or comments, quote which rule is being broken, and why you feel it broke the rules.
Banned Artists

The following artists are banned from the community.

  1. Jago
  2. Stonetoss
  3. GPrime85

It should be noted that when you make reports, it is your responsibility to provide rational reasoning why something should be removed. Saying it simply breaks community rules is not always good enough.

Web Accessibility

Note: This is not a rule, but a helpful suggestion.

When posting images, you should strive to add alt-text for screen readers to use to describe the image you're posting:

Another helpful thing to do is to provide a transcription of the text in your images, as well as brief descriptions of what's going on. (example)
