Threatening a foreign citizen (and former PM no less) with
- Invasion of his home country
- Expelling him from that country
- Forcing him into manual labor in another country (which also is currently independent)
That is insane, even as a joke.
Realistically what is the worst thing China is doing with your private data? Selling it? If you’re not a Chinese National, at least you don’t fall under their jurisdiction.
If you’re a U.S. citizen, with all the tech oligarchs cozying up to the current administration, I’d be a lot more concerned with Facebook/Twitter/Etc collecting your data.
Lukewarm take: mods had valid grievances, but were dumb as fuck to unilaterally make a major decision without even consulting the community beforehand, which is definitely worse imo.
It reminds me of so many subreddits where overactive mods decide they know what’s best for their subreddit and impose rules that would never pass a basic yes/no poll, demonstrating they don’t actually care about the community. Mods are supposed to be janitors (not an insult, just statement of fact), but too often act with the presumed arrogance of “leaders”.
Edit to add: this is what the mods should have done:
- Make a stickied thread with examples of users being banned or comments being removed unjustly
- Ask users if the above justifies moving to a new host, and if so ask which one
It’s that simple
“Wei Wu” has an avatar that looks like it was AI generated, not to mention they’re verified on twitter and they talk exactly like a western person doing a Chinese caricature. Seems fake too me.
Gen X was Trump’s biggest supporter in the last election. More than boomers even.
Obviously not true of every Gen X’er, but when Gen Z talks about boomers they’re usually inadvertently referring to Gen X.
I stg every time UFO Reddit gets worked up, it ultimately has the most mundane explanation which everyone forgets as soon as the next thing comes up.
Cryptocurrencies: higher transaction fees, slower transaction times, and zero consumer protections compared to just using a credit card.
On the other hand, crypto is also terrible for the environment.
Just wait until the adults are people who grew up with the YouTube algorithm
Well he definitely said that in 2020, and if someone had had the foresight to ask him in 2016 he probably would have said it then as well, so I’m going to go ahead and be a little skeptical here.
My single biggest Reddit pet peeve was how they would idolize people who absolutely did not deserve it (see also: old Elon Musk). And lately they’ve been giving Mark Cuban the same treatment. I’m sad to see it happen on Lemmy as well.
Mark Cuban made his billions by quite literally scamming Yahoo. Like say what you will about Bill Gates and Steve Jobs, but at least they made products that people actually use. Then he followed the Trump path of making a shitty reality TV show which grossly inflated his business acumen. And now people are treating him as a saint for pedaling a new company that’s supposed to fix the pharma industry. First of all, he’s not doing this out of charity - it’s 100% strictly a business venture. And second, you know what would fix drug prices? Single payer healthcare. Like there are literally dozens of other countries that sell these same drugs for nothing because they have nationalized healthcare.

Republicans: categorically awful on every single issue
Democrats: Not that
Babies: waaaah I want a competitive party that matches my opinions on every single issue
Find me one major party in the entire world that matches your personal ideals 100%. Spoiler: it doesn’t exist, unless you happen to be a king or dictator of an authoritarian state.
Two party systems means you have two parties with distinct ethics, and one party winning consistently means the country’s ethics will shift over time in the favor of that winning party. So keep spite voting against Democrats and see where that gets you.
Edit: you know why the Democrats are similar to Republicans on so many issues? Because Republicans keep winning elections.
