In short:

A fully laden coal train travelled several kilometres unmanned after it started rolling downhill during a crew change.

The ABC understands the train reached speeds in excess of 60 kilometres per hour.

What's next?

Passenger and coal train services on the line have now resumed, as the Office of the National Rail Safety Regulator investigates the incident.
