Maybe not directly related to young age, but incompetence in problem solving is growing. This could be COVID era fallout.
My kid is a teacher and the newer generation of kids can't do anything by themselves without explicit direction. They dont know how to help themselves. They have no life learned skill or curiosity, as they possible just were fed screen time as a babysitter.

It does till you experience it, and think wtf. Like a sudden dropoff. So maybe all the phone bans across countries is a good thing.
I had a degreed engineer ask me to help them tally the count of screen objects because they kept losing track. There were just over 10 items. I told them they needed to discuss the issue with their manager because clearly that's a problem.
A solution if you lose track while counting could be hand tally on paper, colour code the objects as you tally, use the system and select them all and read the selection count. But to call tech support for manual counting help is crazy.
That does sound extreme, but no more insane than older people who can't complete basic tasks in a word professor application.

From what I understand, the kids who can figure things out, they read well, they can problem solve, they're doing it really well. But the kids that my generation raised on iPads, didn't work with them, didn't let them go outside and play, didn't let them fail, they really really can't do anything.
It's not that this generation is ALL fucked. It's that the gap between the "smart" kids and the kids who got screwed is wider than usual. A lot of these kids are functionally illiterate. If they're reading a paragraph and come across a word they don't know, not only can they not figure out how to pronounce it but, they have no idea how to use context clues to figure out what it even means.
My 17 year old niece saw idiocracy for the first time recently. She compared it to half her high school. Some kid made fun of her recently for using the word "peculiar" because it's apparently a big word no one has ever heard of before.
Social pressure to be dumb is a hell of a drug
Some idiots laughed at me once because I said "space" in a sentence and apparently that was some high science shit ๐ I felt more dumbfounded than bullied?

I have a 12 yo. Definitely a different childhood than I had, but not less helpless or ignorant than I was at that age. Less curious, i.e. in school and sciences, but that could be just a personality thing.

I suggest that youth or young adults are a core contingent of pretty much every antifascist and climate movement. Those movements are growing as well.
