Inspired by a post I saw on AskReddit (which has now been removed). What is something you believe is growing because of young people?

It does till you experience it, and think wtf. Like a sudden dropoff. So maybe all the phone bans across countries is a good thing.

I had a degreed engineer ask me to help them tally the count of screen objects because they kept losing track. There were just over 10 items. I told them they needed to discuss the issue with their manager because clearly that's a problem.

A solution if you lose track while counting could be hand tally on paper, colour code the objects as you tally, use the system and select them all and read the selection count. But to call tech support for manual counting help is crazy.

    That does sound extreme, but no more insane than older people who can't complete basic tasks in a word professor application.

    Not being able to count to the teens is beyond insane.

    It's not that they "can't count to the teens". The wording used in the OP was that they keep "losing track". That's very different and could suggest some kind of visual processing or attention issue rather than not understanding basic numeracy. Those kinds of issues are common intellectual disabilities that people can still succeed with if they find the right mechanisms to allow them to do the same tasks as other people.

    I was born just before the death of the floppy disk and the number of people I've met who can say "I bet you don't know what's that symbol is based on" while also not knowing it saves your work is the reason I'm in mental health instead of tech.

    Stupid has nothing to do with age.

    Its one example, but the new engineers coming in expect people to solve their problem while they check their insta. Literally had my tech guy deployed to help a new engineer, as our guy demonstrates the software steps to solve the issue the guy needing help is doing personal social media checks.. He though people just come do it for you when you get stuck. We have even had young supposed IT staff call in for support and they clearly have no skills on solving issues.

    Dude, that's not someone who didn't learn to count, that's someone experiencing a cognitive issue or who has a learning disability. Don't be a dick. Just count the things. Please use your intact senses and faculties to help others when you have the opportunity.

    Even in the context that the person couldn't count easily called the it help desk, they could raise it as an accessibility issue.

    And the fun thing is, disability is the one minority group that anybody can join, if something bad happens to them, and making things more accessibile for the disabled usually improves the lives of everyone! Like curb cuts and elevators helping parents with strollers in greater numbers than the wheelchairs they are designed for.

    I have a son with Down Syndrome so I know about learning disabilities. It wasn't just that situation it was their whole approach to the job. As a hired engineer they get standardized training and then are expected to work on projects. This person (and many new recruits) would find that it was easier to call tech support, and then they'd ask us to complete the project and then and send the a file back. Thus me saying dude please talk with your manager.

    They get standardized training which does not accommodate their special needs and doesn't train them for what to do when they have special needs that are not being reasonably addressed by their workplace.

    Dude, i gave the extreme example to illustrate, but I have watched the change. The new recruits want others do do the work for them when they get stuck. Like i mentioned in other replies ut wasnt isokated to counting, it was expectation.

    My coworker was helping a guy who got stuck so was showing him the steps to solve instead of watching for next time he went on Insta. That's not learning disabilities it is expectation that somebody else finds out the fix.

    The person, as Engineer, asked IT to complete and engineering project for them, because they had another project due. Not only would that not be kosher for an engineering sign off, its also an ask that is ridiculous

    Okay, but that sounds like something entirely different, it sounds like they're cutting corners to do less work.

    New recruits understand their job doesn't matter and they shouldn't put in any more effort than they have to, it's the older people that think being an engineer is something to be proud of and put in the effort. What you're observing is engineers treating their jobs the same as every other worker, because this is how everyone without a college degree has been for decades.

    But that's distinct from someone who struggles with counting to ten, which can only be described as a disability.

    No, there is a difference between treating as just a 9-5 job, and wanting to sit and not do what you are contracted to do because you'd like somebody else without qualifications to do the work for you. Not only is that just being a shitry human it is negligence on an engineers part.

    As you work toward your PENG there are ethics and expectations of a Professional Engineer, and personal legal consequences if your work injures somebody by negligence.

    The counting person wasn't that they couldn't count past 10, it was that assemblies are 3d and you rotate them, zoom, hide/show parts etc, and they couldn't figure out how to tally without losing track. A problem solver (which is what an Engineer is supposed to be) even with a disability, would jot on a notepad with components names already selected/counted, or simple tally marks as they went.

    As I mentioned this wasn't a person stuggling with a disability (because I have worked with many) it was somebody that had come up through a system that did it for them and assumed that's how you just keep going in life. Maybe chatgpt did their homework, maybe they had charm and had others do everything for them. But its been a common. Thing more recently especially COVID onwards.

    We even had one guy make up support ticket numbers and pretend he was working hard all day, meanwhile its instagram and random, browsing.
