Councillors have voted unanimously to take more action to protect a famous river following a campaign spearheaded by a woman who "married" the waterway three years ago.

Researcher and performance poet Meg Avon staged a wedding to the River Avon in 2023 to raise awareness of pollution and rapidly declining biodiversity.

She and campaign group We Are Avon persuaded Bath and North East Somerset Council to this month endorse a charter recognising the river's right to thrive, flow sustainably and not be polluted.
